The decision was made during a phone call between the US leader and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Accordingly, the two sides discussed the new US tariff policy, when Washington plans to impose a minimum tax of 25% on imported steel products and increase the tax on imported aluminum from 10% to 25%.
Mr Trump said the trade surplus between the two countries was an important factor in his consideration of the tariff exemption, noting that Australia was one of the few countries with which the US maintained a trade surplus.
During Mr Trump's first term, Canberra benefited from Washington's preferential tax policies, maintaining a trade deficit with the US since the mid-20th century, while accounting for only a small share of the steel market in the world's largest economy.
In addition, Mr. Albanese mentioned AUKUS - the defense cooperation agreement between the US, UK and Australia - emphasizing that Canberra's steel and aluminum play an important role in the defense industry of both Washington and London.
Australia has made the first of six payments worth $500 million to the US to boost Canberra's submarine building capabilities, AUKUS said.
