Implementing the policy of land and forest allocation and payment for forest environmental services (PFES), forest protection and development in Nam Nhun district has achieved encouraging results. People in forested areas know how to exploit forest resources reasonably to improve their lives; the district's forest coverage rate increases year by year.

Up to now, Nam Nhun district has 78.5 thousand hectares of forest, of which natural forest is about 76,000 hectares, planted forest is 30 hectares and over 2,000 hectares of forestry forest, forest cover rate is 56.46%. Nam Nhun's forest cover rate has increased by 1-2% and is one of the localities with the highest forest cover rate in the whole province. In 2023, the district's source of forest environmental service payment is over 68 billion VND.
The effectiveness of forests helps the Party Committee, government and people of Nam Nhun district clearly identify the importance of protecting, caring for and developing forests in socio-economic development. Forest protection, care and development are considered a solid foundation to improve income criteria and reduce the rate of poor households, especially in the 3 border communes. From policies on protecting, developing forests and planting new forest areas, people in the district have a stable income every year, especially in difficult communes, villages and ethnic minority areas to gradually help people eliminate hunger and reduce poverty.
To protect the forest, the District Forest Protection Management Board and the commune authorities assign the villages to manage and protect the forest every year. For the people and the community, specialized groups have been established to protect the forest and prevent and fight forest fires (PCCCR), promptly detect, prevent and handle violations of the law on forest protection and development. For the district and commune and town departments and professional offices, build propaganda signs for the areas of payment for forest environmental services in the communes and towns; distribute propaganda posters on forest protection and PCCCR to the villages. Along with that, implement the policy of paying for forest environmental services promptly and to the right beneficiaries. At the same time, guide and orient people to use forest environmental services money effectively.
It can be seen that in the areas enjoying the policy of payment for forest environmental services, there has been close coordination between forest owners, forest protection contracting units with local authorities and forest rangers in sustainable forest development, contributing to combating acts of encroachment on forest resources, limiting deforestation, encroachment on forest land, and illegal exploitation of forest products.

People of Pa Bon village (Nam Pi commune) clear firebreaks to protect the forest during the dry season.

Studying the reality in the border commune of Hua Bum - a locality with a relatively large forest area and forest cover rate in Nam Nhun district (64%), the total natural land area is more than 26,000 hectares. In recent years, the commune has done a good job of propaganda and mobilizing people to plant new trees, take care of and protect forests and effectively use forest environmental services. In 2023, on average, each household in the commune was paid over 25 million VND. The above amount has helped people have a large source of income, while helping to reduce the poverty rate of the commune.
Mr. Do Quang Ngoc - Chairman of Hua Bum Commune People's Committee said: "With a large amount of money, paid in two installments a year, if people do not use it for the right purpose, it will be a waste. From there, based on the conditions of each village, the commune will guide people to use it. For example, in Nam Nghe and Pa Cheo villages, people are oriented to build houses, sanitation facilities or buy poultry and rice seeds to raise for economic development. Chang Chao Pa and Pa Mu villages develop aquaculture and raise large livestock. From the benefits that forests bring, in the coming time, we will continue to propagate to further raise people's awareness in forest protection work".
In the inland commune of Nam Cha, this is also the commune with the largest forest area in the district with more than 11,000 hectares, the coverage rate is over 60%. In 2022, the whole commune received more than 7 billion VND in payment for forest environmental services, on average each household received over 13 million VND/household/year. The above amount has helped many households have the conditions to build livestock barns, buy trees and breeds to develop the household economy. We were present in Nam Cha village - one of the villages with the highest forest coverage rate in the commune with over 70%. Mr. Cheo Senh Choi (a villager) said: “Since receiving money for forest environmental services, people's awareness of forest protection has improved a lot. In the village, if anyone enters the forest to cut down trees or catch animals, the whole village will condemn them and consider not paying the forest environmental services that year. Under the forest canopy, people grow cardamom and some other medicinal plants. Along with the reasonable exploitation of forest resources, it has contributed to improving the lives of local people.
Forest protection not only contributes to creating long-term, prosperous livelihoods for people but also helps to successfully implement socio-economic development goals and environmental protection in the district. At the same time, effectively implement the national target program on new rural construction in the area. Up to now, Nam Nhun district has maintained 3 communes meeting new rural standards, the poverty reduction rate is from 4-5%/year; average income is more than 30 million VND/person/year; 100% of communes and about 60% of villages have convenient car roads during the rainy season. The above results are partly thanks to people protecting and preserving the forest.
Protecting the forest also means keeping the people in the area warm and prosperous, maintaining a sustainable livelihood. With the results achieved, we believe that the forest area of Nam Nhun district will continue to grow, and the people's lives will become more prosperous.
