Bring trash to shore

The replacement and recovery ship carrying officers and soldiers of Battalion DK1 - Naval Region 2 has just docked, the faces of the marine soldiers all showed joy when returning home to see their loved ones after a long mission at sea. However, that did not mean that they forgot to transport waste from the platforms to shore for disposal. Large, heavy bags of waste that required 2 to 3 people to carry were brought ashore and then carefully sorted. Recyclable waste such as cans, plastic bottles... were kept to sell to raise funds, while biodegradable waste was taken to nearby bins for disposal.

Lieutenant Colonel Nghiem Xuan Thai, Political Commissar of Battalion DK1, said that recently, waste from other sea areas has been carried by waves and wind and discharged directly into the sea by fishing boats when exploiting seafood at sea. Faced with this situation, Battalion DK1 has actively called on soldiers on 15 platforms to increase waste collection and treatment to join hands in protecting the marine environment. Solid waste that is difficult to decompose such as plastic, nylon bags, etc. is crushed, compressed, bagged, and then sent by cargo ships to shore for treatment. During holidays and breaks, officers and soldiers on the platform use long sticks with hooks tied to the ends to pick up plastic bags washed up by waves at the foot of the platform. In addition, 100% of the Party Cells of DK1 Platform have also launched the movement "Say no to single-use plastic products" and "Protect a clean, green marine environment".

Lieutenant Colonel Luong Huu Nhuan, Commander of DK1/12 Platform, shared that previously, food and foodstuffs transported from the mainland such as pork, rice, beans, spices, etc. were mainly wrapped in plastic bags and preservative bags, but now they are packaged in reusable bags and environmentally friendly products.

In addition, to avoid fishermen dumping household waste directly into the sea, when fishing boats enter the rig area to take shelter from wind and storms, the island commander integrates propaganda content with propaganda on protecting the marine environment.

Major Vu Van Hau, Commander of DK1/15 Platform, said: “To help people understand the harmful effects of discharging waste directly into the sea, we encourage fishermen to protect the marine ecological environment by saying no to exploiting seafood by blasting, not dumping oil residue into the sea and raising awareness of protecting the marine environment.”

Join hands to protect the blue ocean

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Long, Deputy Chief of Politics, Secretary of the Youth Union of Brigade 171, said that on the occasion of the annual "Vietnam Sea and Islands Week", "World Oceans Day" and "Month of Action for the Environment", the Youth Union of Brigade 171 regularly coordinates with the Youth Union and Women's Union of Ward 11 and Thang Nhat (Vung Tau City) to organize "Volunteer Saturday", "Green Sunday" to collect waste along the beaches of Thuy Van, Long Cung, Bai Truoc, Bai Nhai..., and at the same time meet and mobilize people, tourists, especially fishermen and businesses to join hands to preserve the marine environment.

In addition, while performing their duties, officers and soldiers of Naval Region 2 also strictly say no to hazardous plastic waste. Typically, at Brigade 167, 100% of the ship units have implemented the “100 Dong House” model. Accordingly, every afternoon, the Youth Union collects paper, plastic bottles, foam boxes and recyclable materials and gathers them at the “100 Dong House” and sorts them directly on the spot. Recyclable waste is sold by officers and soldiers to raise funds for Youth Union activities.

“Naval Region 2 will continue to direct agencies and units to regularly educate and raise awareness and responsibility among officers and soldiers about joining hands to protect the marine ecological environment. Along with that, encourage Youth Union bases to promote the pioneering and volunteering role of young people by coordinating with local forces where they are stationed to carry out projects and contributions to join hands to protect the marine environment, contributing to limiting the impact of marine environmental pollution on public health,” said Colonel Do Hong Duyen, Chief of Political Affairs of Naval Region 2.
