Copper rose 0.7% to $9,159.00 a tonne on the London Metal Exchange. Other metals were flat or up, with zinc up 0.7% and aluminium up 0.2%.

Copper prices were on track for an eighth day of gains, their longest winning streak since 2017, as fresh economic data from China brightened the demand outlook in the top metals consumer.

The industrial metal was poised for a rally after data released on Friday showed China's gross domestic product grew 5% in 2024, hitting the government's target.

A stimulus boost boosted activity in the final quarter to a 5.4% growth rate - the fastest pace in six quarters and beating economists' median forecast.

The country's industrial output and retail sales also beat estimates and house prices fell at a slower pace in December, reflecting signs of stability in the property sector, a pillar of demand for industrial metals from copper to steel.

Copper, which ended last year up 2.4%, has gained about 6% so far in 2025, leading six industrial metals higher on the London Metal Exchange amid signs of recovering demand in China. Prices also widened their gap with Comex futures in New York as traders reacted to President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats.
