In a statement on its website on the evening of November 26 local time, the Wallonie-Bruxelles Enseignement said that 27 schools in the capital Brussels and the Brabant region remained closed on November 27 after a bomb warning.

"The bomb warnings were issued on the evening of November 26. And immediately, 27 schools that the organizing agency decided to close "in accordance with the principle of precaution", the statement said.

Police in the capital and the Braban region are conducting searches and are expected to have more information during the day.

This is not the first time schools in Belgium have faced such bomb warnings.

Earlier this month, several schools in and around Brussels were also evacuated after police received reports of bomb threats. The schools involved were Lycee Emile Jacqmain on Rue Belliard, College des Etoiles in Haren and College Roi Baudouin.

A security perimeter was immediately established and all three schools were evacuated. An active search took place, the security perimeter was lifted and students were allowed back into the school.

The Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office has launched a full investigation to identify the perpetrators behind the incident. "Those who make false bomb threats can be punished with a prison sentence of between three months and two years and a fine of between 400 and 2,400 euros," the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office said.
