Nearly 1,500 students had to stay home from school due to sudden floods

Da Nang: A sudden flood overnight brought mud, covering the yard and first-floor classrooms, forcing Hong Quang Primary School to let nearly 1,500 students stay home.

Ms. Le Anh Dao, the principal, said that last evening, the school was flooded after a heavy rain. The classrooms, library, and auditorium on the first floor were all flooded with mud, about 0.3cm deep.

"At around 11 p.m., I proactively asked the Lien Chieu District Department of Education and Training for permission to let students take a day off on November 8 and notified parents that same night," said Ms. Dao.

This morning, the school mobilized 60 teachers with squeegees and brooms to clean up. Many parents and the 409th Special Forces Battalion (General Staff, Military Region 5) stationed near the school also came to help.

Hong Quang Primary School is located at 360 Hoang Van Thai Street (Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District). This is the only school in Lien Chieu District and Da Nang City to have students take a day off today, due to the impact of the sudden flood. Previously, the hydrometeorological agency only predicted scattered and moderate rain in Da Nang.

According to observations, the school yard and classrooms on the first floor are about 0.5-0.7m lower than Hoang Van Thai street. Heavy rain and floods from the surrounding mountains flowed into Phu Loc canal before flowing out to the sea, and flooded the school.

This is the second time in the past three weeks that teachers at Hong Quang Primary School have had to clean up mud due to floods.

"Last night I cleaned up the flood at home, this morning I cleaned up the flood at school," said a teacher, saying he was quite tired.

Last night, people in the flood-prone areas on Me Suot Street and Hoang Van Thai Street had their houses flooded. In particular, in lanes 127 and 161 Me Suot, the floodwaters reached up to one meter in some places, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate during the night.

Early this morning, a notice was spread on social media that "students are off school" due to heavy rain and low pressure. The Da Nang Department of Education and Training confirmed that this was a fake document, advising parents and students to only receive information from homeroom teachers about school closures.
