A VNA correspondent in New Delhi quoted information from local press predicting that India, Indonesia and Vietnam will have a "breakthrough" development in the tourism sector as the middle class increases.

Speaking recently in Bangkok (Thailand), Deputy CEO of France-based Accor SA hotel group, Mr. Jean-Jacques Morin, said that the three countries are ready for strong growth trends as the expanding middle class has financial stability and prioritizes unique experiences over material wealth.

This trend has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with people increasingly shifting from buying products to seeking meaningful experiences.

“Consumer behavior has evolved significantly,” explains Morin. “People now value services and experiences more than material goods.”

Accor SA owns and operates nearly 6,000 hotels and resorts around the world, with more than 45 brands ranging from budget chains like Ibis to luxury Raffles and Banyan Tree resorts. Accor is aiming to expand its portfolio by 3-4% by 2025. Asia is likely to account for about half of that expansion.

Southeast Asia, and India in particular, offers significant growth opportunities, Morin said. “Big tigers” like Singapore, Thailand and Japan will continue to perform well, along with upcoming markets like Vietnam and Indonesia—the most populous country and largest economy in Southeast Asia.

Morin expressed optimism about India. In 2023, the country's two airlines, Air India Ltd. and IndiGo, placed a record order of 970 aircraft, readying for a boom in domestic and international travel.

“The middle class is the most important driver of this industry,” said an Accor SA official. “When you become a little richer, you want to see the world.”

In addition, Mr. Morin predicts an increase in the number of “Generation Z” tourists - those born around the turn of the millennium.

These younger travelers spend significantly more on food and drink and prefer to take so-called leisure trips, where the lines between leisure and business are blurred./.
