Experts say pepper prices may continue to rise in the short term, especially if China, one of the largest customers of Vietnamese pepper, increases imports again. However, pepper prices may stagnate as supplies from the new harvest are gradually replenished.
In Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, in the 2025 crop year, the whole province has more than 10,370 hectares of pepper, of which nearly 10,000 hectares are being harvested; estimated output is more than 25,000 tons. On average, 1 hectare of pepper only yields about 2 tons, down 50% compared to previous years.
However, with the current high pepper price, after deducting costs, farmers earn a profit of 200-300 million VND/ha. It is expected that by the end of February 2025, pepper gardens will be in full harvest.
Farmers in Dak Nong province harvest pepper |
The International Pepper Community (IPC) forecasts that global pepper production will continue to decline in 2025, especially in Vietnam and Brazil – the world’s two largest pepper exporting countries. The community estimates that world pepper production will decrease by about 4%, equivalent to 22,000 tons. IPC assesses that this decline in production could push pepper prices on the world market up this year.
Currently, local farmers are focusing on harvesting pepper. However, pepper productivity in some areas is forecast to decrease due to weather effects.
Many farmers said that in the past, after harvesting pepper, they often consigned all their products to agents or companies after harvesting, leading to a situation where prices were forced down. However, in recent years, many farmers have changed their methods, helping them avoid being forced down and sell at higher prices.
