It is forecasted that by 2045, Hanoi's population could nearly double compared to today, putting pressure on urban infrastructure. Therefore, the capital wants to reduce the number of private vehicles by developing a diverse public transport system, including buses, BRT buses, urban railways, and monorails.
Hanoi's inner city will have 10 main urban railway lines instead of the current planned 8 lines. The two additional lines are 9 and 10. In addition, the capital will have additional elevated monorail lines along both banks of the Red River and the Old Quarter.
In addition, the central area will have 3 more underground railway lines following the urban model associated with public transport (TOD).
The planning for 8 bus rapid transit (BRT) routes remains unchanged, but the city will evaluate the Kim Ma - Yen Nghia BRT route currently in operation to consider investing in the remaining routes.
The bus network will remain the same as it is today, but there will be a roadmap to convert vehicles to use green energy.
Hanoi has 6 expressways running through it, connecting with national and provincial highways to neighboring provinces. In addition to the nearly closed beltways 1-2-3, the capital plans to build additional beltways 4-5. In the center, 4 elevated roads with a length of 36 km will be built in areas with high traffic volume. The main urban axis will be renovated, expanded and combined with new construction.
In the future, Hanoi will have 6 airports. In addition to the existing airports, the South of the city will have a second international airport in Ung Hoa district, with an area of 1,500 hectares, capable of receiving 30-50 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo each year. In addition, the capital has a rescue airport, Bach Mai helicopter; and three military airports ready to serve civilians when needed: Gia Lam, Hoa Lac, Mieu Mon.
Noi Bai International Airport will increase its capacity to 100 million passengers per year by 2050.
Regarding railways, along with Hanoi and Giap Bat stations , the capital plans to expand the Ngoc Hoi station complex (Thuong Tin) to integrate stations, depots, maintenance stations... of national railways (speed of about 100 km/h), North-South high-speed railway (design speed from 200 km/h), and urban railways (metro).
According to the plan, Hanoi has 18 bridges over the Red River, of which 9 have been built and the rest will be built in the future.
In addition, Hanoi wants to have 4 more bridges across the Duong River including: New Duong (road bridge), Giang Bien, Mai Lam, Ngoc Thuy.
