TPO - After being temporarily suspended from work and position by Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology (UMT), Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang, Director of the Institute of Sports Science and Management and activities of the Department of Sports Management of UMT, responded to the school.
Accordingly, Ms. Giang sent a petition to the press and relevant authorities, reflecting that after issuing the above decision, on the evening of January 7, UMT University issued a press release about the temporary suspension of her work and position as dean of the school due to many accusations, the school needed to verify the incident.
Introduction of Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang of UMT |
Ms. Giang said that the School issued a press release naming her and giving an ambiguous explanation because it "received many accusations", not being clear about the content and who the accuser was, causing confusion for her as well as students, parents, colleagues, family and the community. This greatly affected her reputation and honor.
According to Ms. Giang, along with the decision to temporarily suspend her from work and position, the school also blocked the email that had been given to her and even asked security to prevent her from entering the school and the office... According to Ms. Giang, this is against the provisions of the current Labor Code. Therefore, Ms. Giang sent a complaint to the grassroots Trade Union and the School's Board of Directors.
In addition to the above issues, she also "accused" UMT of not paying 1.8 billion VND to two authors of scientific books. According to Ms. Giang, from December 16, 2024, she sent a request to UMT to pay scientific research remuneration exceeding the target from the publication of the book A Unified System Fitness Design (USFD) because specifically according to UMT lecturer regulations, in which the equivalent conversion, the book USFD is considered 26,325 working hours.
Comparing with the current regulations of the School, Ms. Giang calculated that the amount of money that the two authors Nguyen Tra Giang and Oliver Napila Gomez could receive was 1.8 billion VND.
However, while the school still had no official response regarding the expected time of payment of this remuneration, on January 6, Ms. Giang suddenly received a temporary suspension decision from the school...
What does the school say?
On January 10, speaking with Tien Phong reporter, a representative of UMT confirmed that the school had received Ms. Nguyen Tra Giang's complaint and affirmed that the decision to temporarily suspend Ms. Giang from work and position was implemented by the school in accordance with the provisions of the labor regulations, the provisions of the 2019 Labor Code and guiding documents.
According to the representative of UMT School, during the process of the school receiving the complaint, Ms. Giang needs to comply with the school's decision to temporarily suspend her.
“The school has received information requesting payment of scientific research fees from Ms. Giang and is in the process of verifying actual information in accordance with regulations. Ms. Giang’s information that the school owes the above amount is baseless,” the school representative affirmed, adding that, although Ms. Giang is currently suspended from work, she is still performing according to the labor contract signed with the school, so Ms. Giang is requested to comply with the school’s labor regulations and rules.
Previously, as Tien Phong reported, Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang was involved in suspicions related to the authorship of a newly released book.
The book, titled A Unified System Fitness Design: Concepts of Holistic and Inclusive Fitness Framework (abbreviated as USFD), was published by Routledge (UK) on September 24. In Vietnam, on November 24, Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang organized the introduction and launch of the book.
In the information sent to the press, Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang is introduced as the first Vietnamese author to publish a book in the field of sports science at Routledge Publishing House. Ms. Giang's book USFD was written with her colleague, Dr. Oliver Napila Gomez, who also works at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology.
Then, on social networks, information appeared that Mr. Oliver Napila Gomez (Philippines), a co-author, accused Ms. Giang and affirmed that he was the sole author of the manuscript of this book.
On January 7, Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology (UMT) issued a notice of temporary suspension from work and position for Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang, Director of the Institute of Sports Science and Management and activities of the Department of Sports Management. The temporary suspension period is from January 7 to January 21, 2025.
Information from the school said that the school received many complaints from individuals about Ms. Giang. Therefore, the school needs to verify related issues.
The school has now transferred this department to the Faculty of Business; at the same time, a member of the board of directors has been assigned to be in charge of the institute. "This transfer is a change in management and does not affect the training of students majoring in Sports Management," a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology confirmed.
