Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang accuses UMT of owing billions in salary, school says 'baseless'

On the afternoon of January 9, Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang, director of the UMT Institute of Sports Science and Management, sent a letter to the press about the recent temporary suspension of her work by the Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology (UMT).

Previously, on the afternoon of January 6, the principal of UMT issued a decision to temporarily suspend the work and position of Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang - director of the UMT Institute of Sports Science and Management, for 15 days (from January 7 to January 21).

The reason for the temporary suspension, UMT School said that it had received many accusations from individuals about Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang and this information was affecting the reputation of the school.

"The school forbade me from teaching or contacting students or parents, which was very rude."

According to Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang, after issuing the above decision, on the evening of January 7, UMT University issued a press release about temporarily suspending her work and position as dean of the school because there were many accusations, the school needed to verify the incident.

Ms. Giang said: "The fact that UMT University issued a press release naming me and vaguely explaining that it was because it "received many accusations" was unclear about the content and who the accuser was, causing me, the dean, as well as students, parents, colleagues, family and the community, to be very confused. This greatly affected my reputation and honor."

Dr. Giang said that along with issuing the decision to temporarily suspend her from work and position, the school also blocked her school-issued email and even asked security to prevent her from entering the school and office.

"The school's prohibition of me from teaching or contacting students and parents without clarifying the matter is very rude, inappropriate for an educational institution and against the provisions of the current Labor Code. Therefore, I have sent a complaint to the grassroots Trade Union and the UMT Board of Directors and am currently waiting for their response to the complaint," Ms. Giang added.

UMT has not paid 1.8 billion VND to two authors of scientific books?

Also according to Dr. Nguyen Tra Giang, from December 16, 2024, she sent a request to UMT to pay scientific research remuneration exceeding the target from publishing the book A Unified System Fitness Design (USFD) because specifically according to UMT lecturer regulations, in which the equivalent conversion, the book USFD is counted as 26,325 working hours.

"The school clearly stipulates that 'book chapters (book chapters/series) from reputable publishers in the world Q1 with ISBN index' are counted as 1,755 working hours per chapter. The USFD book is published by Routledge Publishing House, UK, a publisher of Taylor & Francis Group.

Furthermore, the school's regulations also clearly state that for every 585 hours of work exceeding the target, the lecturer will have the right to convert it into cash with a value of 40 million VND. Therefore, if calculated according to this formula, the two authors Nguyen Tra Giang and Oliver Napila Gomez will be able to receive an amount of 1.8 billion VND.

However, up to now, the school has not given any official response regarding the expected time of payment of this remuneration. On January 6, I suddenly received a decision of temporary suspension from the school," Ms. Giang was upset.

On the evening of January 9, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , a representative of UMT School affirmed that the decision to temporarily suspend Ms. Nguyen Tra Giang from work and position was made by the school in accordance with the provisions of the labor regulations, the provisions of the 2019 Labor Code and guiding documents for implementation.

At the same time, the school said it had received Ms. Giang's complaint about the temporary suspension decision and was processing it in accordance with the legal procedures for complaints in the field of labor.

"While the school is receiving the complaint, Ms. Giang must comply with the school's decision to temporarily suspend her. The school has received information requesting payment of scientific research fees from Ms. Giang and is in the process of verifying actual information in accordance with regulations. Ms. Giang's information that the school owes the above amount is baseless.

Currently, although Ms. Giang is suspended from work, she is still performing according to the labor contract signed with the school, so we request that Ms. Giang comply with the school's labor regulations and rules," said a school representative.
