MATH OR LITERATURE MUST BE IN THE SUBJECT COMBINATION FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSION
Math and literature are two important subjects in high school. The knowledge, methods and thinking of these two subjects are applied to study many other subjects, as well as to solve life problems.
Therefore, these are 2 compulsory subjects and exams for high school entrance and graduation exams. Recently, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued a draft regulation on admission to universities and colleges of preschool education, stipulating that the admission combination has 3 subjects, suitable to the characteristics and requirements of the training program, in which there must be math or literature with an assessment weight of at least 1/3 of the total score. This further affirms the importance of these 2 subjects, so schools, students and families should pay attention to them.

Mathematics is a difficult subject. The quality of teaching and learning this subject at high school level depends on many factors such as student input, teaching staff, school resources, environment, learning tradition and family investment... Meanwhile, teaching and learning, as well as the quality of literature, are not too different between advantaged and disadvantaged areas.
Math and literature are important, but the balance between subjects contributes to the success of students. Students are not only successful in math or literature, but they can be successful in all fields of science, technology, engineering, economics, history, geography, art, sports, etc. Therefore, when classifying students, at the end of the semester, at the end of the year, the subjects are completely equal or in calculating the average graduation exam score, math or literature both have a coefficient of 1 like other subjects.
TOP 20 LOCALITIES IN AVERAGE TOTAL SCORES OF 2 SUBJECTS
Based on the results of the high school graduation exam scores of these two subjects in localities in 2024, we calculated the average exam scores (TBĐT) of the two subjects, arranged from high to low. As a result, localities nationwide were divided into 3 groups: the top 20 localities, the middle 20 localities, and the bottom 23 localities. This division is relative.
The 20 localities leading in the average total score of the two subjects of literature and mathematics are localities with developed socio-economics and educational traditions. Notably, there are 6 localities with both subjects in the top 10, namely: Nam Dinh (literature ranked 4th - mathematics ranked 1st), Ninh Binh (1 - 6), Bac Ninh (8 - 3), Ha Nam (3 - 8), Vinh Phuc (9 - 5) and Hai Phong (6 - 10). 6 localities have 1 subject in the top 10, including: Binh Duong (18 - 2), Ha Tinh (10 - 22), Ba Ria-Vung Tau (19 - 9), Thai Binh (23 - 7), Thanh Hoa (7 - 38), Tra Vinh (2 - 54). Notably, Tra Vinh is a locality with many Khmer students, but in 2024, it ranked 2nd in literature, while mathematics ranked 54th.
Nghe An and Thanh Hoa are two localities with many students taking the exam and many schools in mountainous areas, but literature ranked 5th and 7th.
Among the five centrally-run cities, only Hai Phong and Hanoi made it into the top 20, while Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can Tho remained outside this top.
TOP 20 MID-RANGE LOCALITIES IN AVERAGE TOTAL SCORES OF 2 SUBJECTS
In these 20 middle-ranking localities, there are 3 centrally-governed cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and Da Nang. Of which, Ho Chi Minh City ranked 4th in math but 43rd in literature, Da Nang ranked 14th in math but 51st in literature, Can Tho ranked 23rd in math and 31st in literature.
23 LOCALITIES AT THE LAST RANGE IN LITERATURE AND MATH AVERAGE
These 23 localities have literature and math rankings ranging from 40 and above; or the localities with high rankings have very low rankings in other subjects. For example, Vinh Long has 15th place in math but 59th place in literature, Ben Tre has 24th place in math and 54th place in literature.
In most mountainous areas, many ethnic minority students have low rankings in literature and math, such as Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lang Son, Yen Bai, Ninh Thuan, Lai Chau, Bac Kan, Dien Bien, Son La, Cao Bang, and Ha Giang.
Solutions for two subjects: Literature and Math
The 2025 high school graduation exam is the first year of implementation according to the 2018 General Education Program.
With the new structure and format of the exam, the exam organization is also completely new with 4 subjects, in which literature and math are 2 compulsory subjects, the remaining 2 subjects are chosen by students from among the subjects (foreign language, physics, chemistry, biology, information technology, history, geography, economic education and law).
Localities need to teach and review early for these two subjects according to the new format and requirements of the sample test recently announced by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2023 and 2024. In particular, the literature subject does not use materials from textbooks and the reading comprehension section is focused on, the reading comprehension test score has increased from 3 points to 4 points compared to before.
