Graduation exam will reduce the probability of getting points by 'circling randomly' answers

The information was stated at the Workshop on preparing the 2025 high school graduation exam, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, on the afternoon of March 11 in Hanoi.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management, said that the exam will closely follow the content of the 2018 general education program. In particular, the Literature exam will continue to be in essay form, the remaining subjects will be in multiple choice form, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Literature, Geography, History, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology and Foreign Languages (English, German, Russian, Japanese, French, Chinese, Korean). Candidates will take two compulsory subjects: Mathematics and Literature, and two optional subjects.

For multiple choice subjects, the exam consists of three parts. Part I consists of questions with four options, requiring candidates to choose one correct answer. Candidates receive 0.25 points for each correct answer.

Part II consists of true/false questions. Candidates will receive 0.1 point for each correct answer, 0.25 points for two correct answers, 0.5 and 1 point for 3 and 4 correct answers.

Part III consists of short answer questions, requiring candidates to choose the correct answer. For Math, each correct answer is worth 0.5 points, for other subjects it is 0.25 points.

Mr. Ha said that according to the graduation exam structure above, the probability of getting a randomly selected score decreases from 2.5 to 1.975 points for Math and 2.35 points for the remaining multiple choice subjects.

"The probability of getting a score due to random selection is reduced because the test has short answer questions. The probability of getting a random score in this part is 0, the way of thinking is almost like an essay test," said Mr. Ha.

Regarding the true/false question format - another new format that will appear in the graduation exam from 2025, Mr. Ha said that this format simultaneously tests 4 expressions of ability in the same question, combined with the scoring rules to create high classification.

Representatives of the Ninh Binh Department of Education and Training highly appreciated the ability to reduce the probability of getting points thanks to "random circling" that the high school graduation exam structure from 2025 brings. After reviewing the sample exam, key teachers of this province said that the inclusion of new question types helps assess students' abilities.

Ms. Le Thi Huong, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri, agrees with the structure and format of the high school graduation exam from 2025 announced by the Ministry. However, she believes that with the two new multiple-choice test formats, the Ministry needs to continue testing in the direction of assessing students' abilities, ensuring classification.

Regarding the exam library, the representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said that it will be "open". Accordingly, the question library will be selected from the survey questions of the Departments of Education and Training and high schools. The units will send good questions along with the exam results for the Ministry's professional agencies to analyze, thereby building a standardized exam question bank.

According to Mr. Ha, this is a new point compared to the current question bank building process. Currently, the question bank is prepared by a group of experts in 9 steps, with confidentiality from start to finish.

Some Departments of Education and Training believe that this approach will help make testing and evaluation more realistic.

2025 is the year when the first batch of students under the new general education program will take their graduation exams. Currently, the high school graduation exam is organized with 6 subjects, including Math, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Social Science (History, Geography, Civic Education). Thus, from 2025, the number of exam subjects will be reduced by two and the number of exam sessions will be reduced by one.

Regarding the method of considering and recognizing high school graduation in 2025, the Ministry said that it will combine the results of the assessment process and the results of the graduation exam at an appropriate rate. In addition, the exam will maintain the paper-based exam format until 2030, after 2030, a pilot computer-based exam will be conducted with multiple-choice subjects.
