According to Mr. Nguyen Van Canh, when attending a major conference abroad, they require guests to wear traditional costumes or European-style suits, but we have not yet regulated traditional costumes in diplomacy, only wearing available vests, so we have not been able to bring our own identity to international friends.

Right in the meeting hall today, delegate Nguyen Van Canh wore a five-panel ao dai for men; at the same time, he shared that he had worn 3 other five-panel ao dai during this session.

The delegate analyzed that the five-panel ao dai has four outer panels symbolizing the four parents embracing one child's body symbolizing the wearer. This shows the love of parents and reminds the wearer of the Vietnamese filial piety.

The five buttons are considered to symbolize the five constants: humanity, courtesy, righteousness, integrity, and honesty, reminding the wearer to live a more humane life and behave more culturally.

The five-panel ao dai for men is also being worn more and more ,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Canh.

National Assembly Delegate Nguyen Van Canh (Binh Dinh delegation).

I planned to wear the five-panel ao dai during the opening session and sing the national anthem during the flag-raising ceremony. However, the delegate handbook stipulates that men wear suits, so I did not wear them ,” delegate Nguyen Van Canh shared and suggested that the National Assembly consider adding a content to the Resolution of this session, which is to allow delegates to wear the five-panel ao dai for men at meetings, in addition to wearing suits so that delegates are allowed to wear the five-panel ao dai to visit Uncle Ho’s Mausoleum and to wear it at the flag-raising ceremony.

According to him, as stipulated in the Resolution, the Government and localities will not have to review, amend, or supplement this regulation in sub-law documents on clothing.

The delegate further emphasized that wearing the Ao Ngu Than does not change any regulations on wearing other costumes, it does not replace the suit but only helps delegates and attendees have more options to wear traditional costumes in cultural activities and diplomatic events.

Allowing men to wear the five-panel ao dai at conferences and events will help responsible agencies and people have a realistic view, have time to see more clearly the traditional values, the practical suitability when bringing the five-panel ao dai back to Vietnamese life; aiming to build a separate set of traditional costumes for Vietnamese people at major cultural conferences and State diplomatic events.

This uniform will still preserve traditional features, suitable for daily life and work in modern society and commensurate with the attire of counterparts in diplomatic events and international cultural exchange activities.

We also know the saying “If culture exists, the nation exists”, we have preserved the Vietnamese cultural identity through thousands of years of building and defending the country. In the integration period, in order not to be dissolved, we must preserve the unique cultural identity of the Vietnamese people, costumes are a part of cultural identity. The countries around us and in the world mostly have traditional costumes. The project on traditional costumes has not been approved yet, in my opinion, partly because there are no regulations for pilot wearing to have more practice ”, the delegate of Binh Dinh emphasized and hoped that the National Assembly would accept the above proposal; the Government and localities would pay attention to the development of traditional costumes in the coming time.
