Hanoi is promoting agricultural production in specialized areas, meeting the food needs of about 10 million people living in the capital; partly supplying other localities and aiming for export.
Not only that, Hanoi city also strengthens brand building, trademarks, deep processing, and product selection to participate in the evaluation and classification of the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program. From here, it further "awakens" the advantages of specialized areas, further enhancing the value of products.
OCOP agricultural products come from specialized areas
The communes of Van Duc (Gia Lam district), Trang Viet (Me Linh district), Van Noi (Dong Anh district) ... are the traditional "barnacles" of vegetables, tubers and fruits of Hanoi. The average area of vegetable growing areas in these localities is from 10 to 15 hectares, some areas are over 100 hectares. Currently, these specialized areas all apply science and technology to cultivation, such as: Using high-quality seeds, mechanization, greenhouse systems, net houses ..., so the quality of products is increasingly improved.
Deputy Director of Van Duc Agricultural Production and Service Cooperative (Gia Lam District) Dinh Thi Luyen said that the whole commune has 285 hectares of agricultural production, of which nearly 200 hectares are vegetable growing areas. Each year, Van Duc vegetable area supplies about 35,000 tons of green vegetables to supermarkets and wholesale markets. To increase production value, since 2019, the cooperative has selected products to compete in the OCOP evaluation and classification competition and 17 products have been certified. "From the effectiveness of the OCOP Program, in 2024, the cooperative has prepared a complete dossier for the evaluation and re-classification of products that have expired," Ms. Dinh Thi Luyen added.
Chuong My district is also a locality with a large agricultural production area. In recent years, with the support of the authorities, local people have transformed the structure of crops and livestock, forming specialized production areas, especially fruit trees. Mr. Nguyen Tien Luyen in Lam Dien commune has 20,000m2 of 100 Phuc Trach grapefruit trees and 300 Dien grapefruit trees. His family's grapefruit garden is 22 years old, each grapefruit tree yields an average of 60 to 120 fruits, with a total output of about 32,000 fruits/year. Mr. Luyen shared that his family's Phuc Trach grapefruit product was classified as 3-star OCOP in 2021 and will continue to be evaluated and re-classified in 2024, helping to affirm the brand and quality of the product. Currently, all 100 Phuc Trach grapefruit trees of his family have been harvested and sold at an average price of 35-40 thousand VND/fruit.
According to the Office of the Coordination of the New Rural Development Program of Hanoi City, up to now, Hanoi City has evaluated and classified 2,924 products; including 6 5-star products, 12 potential 5-star products, 1,473 4-star products, 51 potential 4-star products and 1,382 3-star products. Most of the OCOP products are agricultural products and processed products from specialized farming areas.
Strive to have at least 2,000 more products
According to the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the city currently has an annual crop area of about 224,500 hectares and an estimated grain output of 1 million tons/year. The total perennial crop area is about 24,027 thousand hectares; of which fruit trees are 20,359 thousand hectares, tea trees are 2,000 hectares and the rest are other perennial crops.
The city has 406 high-tech agricultural production models; of which 262 models are in the field of cultivation, concentrated in the districts of Hoai Duc, Me Linh, Gia Lam, Thuong Tin, Dong Anh, Thanh Oai, Dan Phuong... The high-tech agricultural models have initially brought high economic efficiency, suitable for the actual situation of Hanoi. The city has also developed and maintained 159 safe agricultural production and consumption chains, including 53 animal product chains and 106 plant product chains. The chains have attracted many businesses, cooperatives, and farming households to cooperate in building the chains.
Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Dai said that Hanoi is the second largest city in the country, with a population of about 10 million people. To promote its potential and strengths, and ensure the agricultural sector develops effectively, stably and sustainably, the city needs to invest more heavily in this sector, in order to improve productivity and quality of agricultural products, and contribute to protecting the ecological environment, responding to climate change, increasing income and improving the lives of farmers.
Hanoi City aims to continue restructuring the agricultural sector by 2030; build a concentrated, environmentally friendly, climate change-adaptive and internationally integrated agricultural sector... Hanoi also aims to have at least 2,000 more products evaluated and classified as OCOP. Developing OCOP products associated with specialized areas has contributed positively to the economic restructuring, restructuring of crops and livestock; developing crops and livestock with high economic value, creating effective production and business models; creating many high-quality agricultural products and goods for the market and society, contributing to promoting and enlivening economic activities in rural areas.
