During the war in the North, teachers and students of the Irrigation School had to evacuate to the countryside in Luc Nam and Hiep Hoa, Ha Bac, now Bac Giang province. During nearly 10 years of evacuation, despite difficult and inadequate teaching and research conditions, the school still trained excellent engineers, managers, and researchers for the country.
After the liberation day, identifying the important role of irrigation work, the school's cadres, lecturers, new engineers and final year students went to the South under the policy of the Ministry of Irrigation, carrying out the tasks of training human resources, scientific research and technology transfer, planning and designing key irrigation and hydroelectric works for the provinces of the South Central, Central Highlands and the South.
These training facilities later became branches of the University of Water Resources.
Entering the second decade of the 21st century, Thuy Loi University has made a strong transformation with the construction of the second school development strategy, period 2021-2030, vision to 2050.
The school's goal is to become a large-scale, multidisciplinary, research-oriented university, one of the top 10 universities in Vietnam in the fields of engineering, technology, economics and management.
With this goal, the school continuously builds, improves and develops training programs.
From only training a few majors, now the University of Water Resources has enrolled 79 majors, including 41 undergraduate majors, 23 master's majors and 15 doctoral majors. The school's training scale is more than 26,000 students.
Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Minh Thu added that the percentage of lecturers with doctoral degrees at the school reached 61.3%.

Along with a network of more than 150 international partners in the field of research, the school develops a wide network of business partners, creating an open mechanism for businesses to participate in training, improving the practicality, applicability and updating of the curriculum.
Through this network, students learn while doing, and the employment rate after graduation has increased over the years.
