Two US Navy SEALs went missing while on a mission on the night of January 11 off the coast of Somalia (Illustration: US Navy).
The incident happened in the Gulf of Aden. While boarding a ship in rough seas, a SEAL slipped off a ladder and fell, the Washington Post reported, citing sources familiar with the situation. Seeing this, another SEAL jumped in after him.
According to SEAL rules, when one member falls into the ocean, the next member jumps after him, ABC said.
Both SEALs remain missing. Two US officials said a search and rescue mission was underway.
ABC reported that the mission on January 11 was not related to the joint patrol mission that the US and other countries are carrying out to protect commercial ships in the Red Sea, nor was it related to the US and UK attacks on Yemen in the past two days.
Another US official said the mission was also unrelated to Iran's recent seizure of the oil tanker St. Nikolas.
In a statement on January 13, the US Central Command said it was conducting a search and rescue operation to locate the two commandos. The agency said it would not release further information about the incident until the rescue mission was completed.
US special forces often have to carry out difficult and dangerous missions, according to the Washington Post . In November 2023, five crew members of an elite aviation unit were killed in a refueling accident off the coast of Cyprus.
