VOV.VN - By the afternoon of September 10, landslides in Yen Bai province had left 34 people dead and missing, and 13 injured. The number of damaged and flooded houses has reached tens of thousands and cannot be fully counted because the water has not yet receded from the streets and residential areas. The priority task of Yen Bai at this time is to rescue victims and temporarily stabilize the lives of people in flooded areas. Landslides in recent days have killed dozens of people in Yen Bai city and districts. Of which, two serious landslides occurred last night, September 9, in Minh Xuan commune, Luc Yen district, which took the lives of 5 people, 4 people are still missing; the landslide in Minh Bao commune, Yen Bai city killed 4 people. Due to the terrain, Yen Bai people often have to level the ground and build houses at the foot of hills and mountains. When there is prolonged heavy rain like the impact of storm No. 3 this time, the soil and rocks are saturated with water, leading to landslides which are inevitable. Therefore, currently, Yen Bai localities are making efforts to check households at landslide-prone areas to evacuate to safe places.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Loi, Chairman of the People's Committee of Minh Bao Commune, Yen Bai City, said: "We don't know exactly what time the landslide happened, but when we found all the bodies it was 11:00 am today (September 10). Now we are mobilizing excavators to clear the main road to serve the relief activities for collapsed houses. We also bring the poor households to the People's Committee of the commune to stay, support with food and drink, and then we will consider the next steps."

Up to now, many localities of Yen Bai province are still isolated and cut off due to rising river water and landslides; more than 13,500 houses were damaged; many national highways and provincial roads were seriously eroded, causing traffic jams. The medium and low voltage power grid systems were also severely affected, causing power outages in many localities; the communication system was also interrupted. Up to this point, Yen Bai province has mobilized over 10,800 people to participate in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, mobilizing all means to ensure the continuity of roads, repair the communication system, power grid as well as rescue damaged households... Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tien Do, Head of Yen Bai City Police, said: "We are focusing on the number 1 priority of moving people out of dangerous areas to ensure their safety. During the implementation of the mission, heavy rain and strong river currents are also dangerous for the rescue force. However, with the spirit of serving the people, we are determined to overcome all difficulties to ensure the safety of people's lives and property." Faced with the serious consequences caused by natural disasters, today, September 10, the Chairman of Yen Bai Provincial People's Committee signed and issued Decision 1814 declaring a natural disaster emergency in Yen Bai province with the following situations: Heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, and inundation. This morning, during a working session with Yen Bai province, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thanh Long requested Military Region II and the Ministry of National Defense to support localities in Yen Bai province in providing relief to people and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters; The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment is in charge of Yen Bai city and the Chairman of Yen Bai Provincial People's Committee is in charge of Yen Binh district, which are key areas of natural disasters in the coming days. The Deputy Prime Minister also suggested considering upgrading the level of natural disasters to proactively respond appropriately to natural disasters occurring in the province; it is necessary to mobilize professional forces to have appropriate solutions in rescue and relief. The ultimate goal is to minimize damage, in which ensuring the safety of people's lives is paramount.
