Coca-Cola recalls 28 million bottles in Austria due to possible metal fragments

On October 24, Coca-Cola Company recalled 28 million 500ml plastic soft drink bottles in Austria due to concerns that they may contain small pieces of metal due to an accident at the factory.

According to German radio station DW, on October 24, beverage manufacturer Coca-Cola announced the recall of 28 million 500ml plastic bottles of its drinks including Coke, Fanta, Sprite and MezzoMix with expiration dates from February 4, 2025 to April 12, 2025.

The company said it could not rule out the possibility that some of the soft drink bottles may have contained small pieces of metal due to a technical error during the manufacturing process.

“We recommend that consumers do not consume products that may contain metal fragments as they may pose a health risk,” Coca-Cola said in a statement on October 24.

The soft drink giant said it has recalled nearly 30 million bottles of the drink as a precaution against the worst happening to customers.

They also worked closely with Austrian authorities in recalling the 500ml bottles.

“Consumers can return the product to food retailers in Austria for a refund without presenting a receipt. We regret this incident. We apologize to consumers for any inconvenience,” Coca-Cola added.

However, according to this beverage company, there are still many bottles of soft drinks in the above defective batches at the company and in the warehouses of retailers.

Alexander Hengl, a spokesman for the Vienna Market Authority, said his agency and its 80 inspectors were monitoring whether retailers had removed the bottles from their shelves. He hoped the recall would be completed within a few weeks.
