My colleagues and I like to drink salted coffee, almost every morning. Is it harmful to our health? (Tung, 30 years old, Hanoi)
Reply:
Salt coffee is made by mixing coffee, salt, cream and condensed milk, creating a unique flavor that is loved by young people. According to the recipe, a cup of salt coffee can contain up to 5g of salt, equivalent to 25g of coffee powder.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that each adult should not eat more than 5 grams of salt per day, while Vietnamese people eat 9.4 grams of salt, nearly twice the recommended amount. If you drink more salted coffee, it means you are consuming more salt than your body needs.
Excess salt intake is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attack. It also increases the risk of stomach cancer, kidney failure, osteoporosis, and many other disorders.
It is best to limit salty coffee, not to drink it every day. If you are curious, you can try salty coffee but you need to reduce the need for salt in your meals. On average, a person should only eat less than 5g/day. Coffee is a drink that helps you stay awake, but you should not abuse it, you should only drink 1-2 cups/day and be careful not to drink it before bedtime to avoid insomnia.
