Sharing the story of his affinity with banana trees, the young man born in 1990, Le Vu Lam, in Hamlet 8, Hoa An Commune, Phung Hiep District (Hau Giang Province), said that since he was a child, every time he came home from school, he would follow his parents to plant and take care of banana trees in the home garden.

When he was 16 years old, his family opened a fruit store in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city, also associated with bananas.

Although he graduated from university with a degree in electrical engineering, but with a connection to banana trees since childhood, and working for farms related to trading agricultural products, which has ingrained his way of thinking and working, Vu Lam decided to start a business growing tissue-cultured South American bananas in his hometown of Phung Hiep, with an initial area of 7 hectares.

After 9 months of growing South American bananas, Mr. Vu Lam harvested and after deducting all expenses, earned a profit of nearly 600 million VND.

Seeing the effectiveness of banana cultivation, some neighboring farmers came to learn and cooperate with Vu Lam to convert from ineffective cajuput and sugarcane growing land to tissue-cultured South American banana cultivation.

Currently, the total area of tissue-cultured bananas that Vu Lam cooperates with households in and outside the province to grow and purchase is 42 hectares.

Of the area of South American banana plantations under the association, 16 hectares are planted in Phung Hiep district, the remaining 26 hectares are in association with households outside the province specializing in growing for export.

In 2024, Mr. Vu Lam and his partner exported 102 containers of South American bananas to the Malaysian market, with a quantity of 2,040 tons of bananas, bringing in revenue of 2.4 billion VND.

Taking advantage of spoiled bananas and substandard bananas, Lam uses them as food to raise catfish and giant catfish on an area of 3,000 square meters in banana gardens.

After 18 months of farming, he harvested catfish and elephant ear fish and sold them for a profit of several hundred million dong. From this efficiency, he is expanding the area for raising elephant ear fish and catfish to over 5,000m2 of water surface, the fish food is sourced from spoiled bananas and substandard bananas.

Raising additional animals that eat bananas is a model that banana growers can exploit to increase their family income.

The effectiveness of the startup model of the 9X guy Le Vu Lam on the alum land also creates regular jobs for 8 people and seasonal jobs for 20 people, with a stable income of 7-9 million VND/month, helping rural workers have a stable income, not having to leave their hometown to start a business.
