RECORD FOR "FIRST ATTACK"
Scoring 4 goals in less than 3 minutes! It may sound a bit "sensational", or the commentators are a bit too bold to emphasize the phenomenon of Brentford often scoring very early in recent matches in the Premier League. However, it is not a fabrication. Brentford opened the scoring in the 22nd second against Man.City; 23rd second against Tottenham; 38th second against West Ham; and 75th second against Wolverhampton. That's a total of 4 goals in the first 158 seconds of the last 4 matches!
Scoring in the first minute of three consecutive games is a record, not just in the Premier League era but in the entire history of the English championship. In the fourth game, it was truly unimaginable, although there was enough difference for Brentford's strange record to stop at 3: they had to wait until... the 2nd minute to open the score, against Wolverhampton. The reason is worth noting: while Brentford always kicked the ball in the previous 3 games, in the fourth game, Wolverhampton was the team to kick the ball.

Putting aside the "sensational" aspect, Brentford's frequent scoring of early goals is an interesting story from a technical point of view. One thing is for sure: the repetition in 4 consecutive matches cannot be a coincidence. Moreover: in the win over Wolverhampton (opening the score after 75 seconds), Brentford quickly scored another similar goal. After being level at 2-2, Brentford needed only 32 seconds after the kick-off to score to make it 3-2.
A characteristic of top-flight matches is that early goals (within the first two minutes) are not usually scored from clear-cut chances. Such goals are hard to come by, according to a new statistic that has emerged in football statistics: xG, or “expected goal” from a shot. The combined probability of Brentford’s three opening goals in the first minute was just 0.54 – meaning that each shot had an average chance of scoring just 18%.
X DESERVES THE RESULTS
When the statistics are so numerous that they can balance pure luck, it is clear that Brentford are deserving of their early goals. Since the start of the season, Brentford's total xG in the first 90 seconds of their seven matches is 0.83. This is the highest in the league and four times higher than the next team - Tottenham with an xG of 0.21. The giants Man.City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea are all in the mid-table range with xG between 0.03 and 0.09. As for MU, this index is completely zero. The Old Trafford team has not made a single shot in the first 90 seconds this season. This is one of the contrasting aspects like day and night in the MU - Brentford match tonight.
It was always the same: more than half of Brentford were right on the halfway line (as high as they could get), with only 1-2 players below the halfway line. There were always at least 4 players well to the right, ahead of the kick-off. Their opponents were just standing in their usual formation. That was when Brentford were allowed to kick-off. When their opponents kicked-off, Brentford had to wait until they had the ball before they could attack. They would pass it back to the goalkeeper or centre-back and immediately the next pass would be long and high to the right, where many Brentford players were waiting.
Set-piece coach Keith Andrews has been giving Brentford a lot of practice with the serve-in since he arrived this summer. The "trick" mentioned above is well-prepared. And Brentford have not only prepared that "trick" (stay tuned). What's worth noting here is that Brentford see the serve-in as a set-piece, which can be practiced to its full potential. On the contrary, people often "don't kick" in the first few minutes. Statistics show that: the first 10 minutes of superstar Lionel Messi's entire career are spent almost... walking.
