Born and raised in Lam Dong, My Linh (born in 1998) never thought that one day she would marry an American and move to live in this faraway country.

Meeting her current husband William Gregg (nicknamed Will, born 1984, US Army nurse) in 2018 completely changed Linh's life. After a period of dating, in 2019, Linh got married.

My Linh created a cooking channel because her husband loves Vietnamese food.

Linh said that the first time Will visited her family in Vietnam in 2019, the whole family invited him to eat bitter melon shoots with balut. At first, Will was afraid. But when his wife said that this was a popular dish, he patiently ate it.

“After a few times, my husband got used to and liked the sweetness of the balut. Now he can eat 3-4 eggs at a time,” Linh said.

In 2020, Linh immigrated to the US. At first, in a strange place, Linh tried to learn how to cook American and easy-to-eat Vietnamese dishes so that her husband could get used to them.

The first Vietnamese meal Linh cooked for her husband in America included fried rice with eggs, stir-fried water spinach, and sweet and sour ribs. "Although it was the first time eating it, my husband really liked it, ate a lot, and kept praising it as delicious," Linh said.

"When my husband's parents occasionally come to visit, we also get to enjoy meals full of Vietnamese dishes. Partly because I'm not used to cooking American food, and partly because I want to take the opportunity to introduce Vietnamese cuisine to my husband's family.

I also invited my grandparents to try the balut. The first time, my parents praised it as delicious, sweet, and easy to eat, so the next times, I often bought it to boil for the whole family," Linh shared.

Besides cooking for her husband and cleaning the house, Linh had a lot of free time. Because she had no friends in her new place, Linh always felt sad and empty because she stayed at home all day.

She often makes videos about her husband's hometown, her life abroad, and how to cook some Vietnamese and European dishes. When she first posted them, Linh was surprised by the number of "likes" and comments on her personal page.

Seeing the good effect and being encouraged by her husband, Linh decided to open a YouTube channel to share cooking Vietnamese dishes in the US, and at the same time, prepare the dishes and enjoy them with her husband and children.

"Kill two birds with one stone", Linh thought that by doing so, she would not only attract people to watch her channel, but she would also take the opportunity to cook a variety of dishes for her husband to enjoy.

Linh’s husband’s favorite dishes are fried rice and fried chicken with fish sauce. The two dishes Will has not dared to try are blood pudding and durian. My Linh once tried to invite her husband to try blood pudding but he refused because he looked “a bit scared”. Durian has a “strange smell” so her husband put it down as soon as he put it in his mouth, not daring to try it a second time.

The last time, Linh and her husband made chicken salad with banana core. Where Linh lives, bananas are grown, so she asked her husband to cut a small banana tree, take the core, slice it thinly, mix it with chicken, and season it like a Vietnamese salad to enjoy.

Linh said Will was surprised that banana trees could be turned into food. Will was very pleased with the finished chicken salad.

According to Linh, all the ingredients for Vietnamese dishes can be found in the US, but it is a bit difficult and expensive. Stores that have one ingredient do not have another. Linh has to go to 3-4 stores to have enough ingredients to make one Vietnamese dish.

"Fried chicken with fish sauce is a little cheaper, so I often cook it. Every time I cook, I cook two meals at once to save time. The whole family can comfortably gather around a 2-3 dish meal. My husband is now addicted to Vietnamese food," My Linh said.

After supporting his wife for a long time, Will can now cook some Vietnamese dishes himself such as: boiled water spinach, fried eggs, fried rice and season them quite well.

My Linh's son can eat both Vietnamese and American food and is always excited about his mother's menu. He has also appeared in many of his mother's eating videos.

“I chose to make Vietnamese cooking videos because I want to spread Vietnamese cuisine to everyone. Sometimes when my American neighbors come over, I invite them to enjoy Vietnamese dishes. My husband’s parents now love to visit their children because they get to enjoy Asian food.

The moment of reunion made me feel very happy, just like my family in Vietnam. When posting the video, I also received a lot of compliments and criticisms. For me, all comments are very valuable, I appreciate them to change and do better," Linh confided.
