A message on a dating app, a chance meeting by Hoan Kiem Lake or an online chat - those are the beginnings of many beautiful love stories between Vietnamese wives and Western husbands.
"Matchmaker" named dating app
That is the love story of Ms. Le Ngoc Thanh (34 years old) and her Western husband named Vukic Daniel Mark (48 years old). The couple currently lives in Australia.
Daniel said he and his wife met through a dating app during the COVID-19 pandemic. After about 2 weeks of chatting online, they arranged to meet in person.
"We met around December, and by Valentine's Day the following year, we officially became friends. I asked her many times: "Will you be my girlfriend?", at first she kept refusing, saying: "Not yet, I'm not sure, you're a foreigner". But finally she agreed," he recounted.

Ngoc Thanh shared that before accepting Daniel's love, she had many hesitations because of the age gap, geography, culture... At first, she did not intend to open her heart because she had previously planned to only study abroad in Australia and then return to Vietnam. She confided: "I thought a lot and was also worried because if I stayed there, I would have to rebuild from scratch. Many times I had to consider whether to choose this love or not. So at first I did not open my heart, but he was very sincere. I thought this was someone who could be suitable for me, so I gave him a chance to get to know me."
After a period of being together, the two decided to get married. She shared that when they first met, her mother was supportive, but when it came to the wedding, she did not agree. Because her mother is a traditional person, she did not accept the wedding without a bride procession, an ancestral altar, or other Vietnamese wedding customs. However, when she came to Australia, she saw that Daniel was very sincere, organized a grand wedding with many attendees, so she stopped worrying.
Since moving in together, Ngoc Thanh has been loved and pampered by her husband. Now the couple has a cute baby.
Unexpected fate from an English extracurricular activity
The wedding of Ms. Lo Thi Thuy (26 years old, Son La) and groom Henry (24 years old, American) in early 2024 caused a stir on social networks. The image of the groom's mother and grandmother wearing Thai costumes when coming to pick up the bride, along with the wedding rituals imbued with the traditions of the Thai ethnic group, surprised and delighted many people.
The wedding of the couple Thuy - Henry once caused a fever on social networks. |
Recounting her love story, Ms. Thuy said that 5 years ago, she and her foreign husband accidentally met each other during an extracurricular English class on Hoan Kiem Lake. To practice her communication skills, she took the initiative to get to know and talk to Henry. Henry then came to Hanoi to visit the beautiful sights of the capital. He did not forget to visit Hoan Kiem Lake because this is a famous check-in location for many Western tourists.
"The first time I met him, I simply wanted to find a foreigner to practice English communication. After chatting, I knew he also wanted to learn Vietnamese, so we exchanged ways of contact. I taught him Vietnamese, and in return he shared his English knowledge with me. During that process, we talked and realized that we had many similar interests and thoughts. He was very open, warm and very positive. We gradually developed feelings for each other. After that, I accepted his confession and began a long-distance relationship for 5 years," Ms. Thuy shared.
Due to the geographical distance, they can only see each other once or twice a year. Especially when Covid-19 broke out, it took them 2 years to see each other again. The couple mainly chatted and shared daily moments through social networks. Due to the time difference, each person has their own job, so they have to arrange their time to be able to contact each other.
When Thuy and Henry decided to get married, both families were completely supportive. Before the wedding, during an online call between the two families, everyone discussed how to conduct the wedding. Finally, the family agreed that the wedding in Vietnam would be conducted according to traditional Thai rituals. Thuy confided that she was lucky because her husband's family respected the traditional culture of the Vietnamese people.
Currently, Thuy and her husband are living and working in Hanoi. Henry quickly got acquainted and integrated into traditional Vietnamese culture. He had the opportunity to attend important holidays with his family, wrap Chung cakes, drink Can wine and eat specialties...
Two meetings, one love blossoms
After three and a half years of chatting online, one in Vietnam, one in Belgium, the second time they met, Thanh Thuy (30 years old, from Dak Lak) and Men Cheo (also known as Mati, 33 years old, in Belgium) decided to register their marriage.
At the end of 2018, Cheo sent a message to talk to Huong, Thuy’s twin sister. Huong did not know English, so Thuy answered for her. Thuy, who majored in English, was able to converse fluently with Cheo. From then on, every time Cheo texted, Huong would ask Thuy to reply.
The more they talked, the more they felt connected and had feelings for each other. That was why Thuy decided to tell Cheo that she was not the owner of this account. At first, she was worried that it would make him angry, but Cheo's answer made Thuy remember it forever. He said: "This doesn't affect anything. I've always talked to you because I like your stories, not because of your name or profile picture."

Around the end of 2019, Cheo flew to Vietnam for their first meeting and the two became close very quickly. The visit lasted 3 months. The couple took the opportunity to travel to several places, experiencing Vietnamese culture during the year-end festivals. Cheo had a very good impression of Vietnamese food and people.
After Cheo returned home, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, so the couple had a long-distance relationship for more than 2 years. Chatting every day on the phone screen, the two enjoyed each other's stories. They shared almost everything with each other, without hiding anything. Therefore, the couple was confident that they understood each other very well even though they had only met once.
At the end of May 2022, when Vietnam reopened after the Covid-19 pandemic, Cheo immediately returned to Vietnam for the second time to meet his girlfriend. This time, the couple decided to register their marriage right away. Nearly a year later, they held a wedding ceremony with the presence of both families.
Currently, Thuy and Cheo are living in Dak Lak. Cheo has a private garden where he can enjoy his favorite farming job. Both are very satisfied with life in Vietnam.
