Starting a business from village wood

Since he was a youth union official, Vo Van Hoai has been wondering how to develop local specialties. In 2015, he went to Binh Duong province to learn how to make mother-of-pearl buttons. He then went to the North to learn how to inlay pearls on wood, then returned to Binh Duong to continue learning how to make lacquerware.

With his skills in hand, Mr. Hoai and his like-minded comrades cooperated to open a lacquer wood processing workshop in Tan Phu urban area, Binh Duong province. "With a stable job, a large number of customers, and a market for exporting goods to Korea, I want to return to my hometown to start a business, to realize my dream from the profession I learned to contribute to the prosperity of my hometown" - Mr. Hoai said.

With great ambitions, last year the young man returned to the land of the Fairies. Taking advantage of local wood, Mr. Hoai produced cups, bowls, and plates from small-leaf acacia and rosewood; made spoons and stir-fry shovels from longan wood; created wooden chopsticks from bonbon trees, and made worshiping objects from jackfruit wood and lac mat trees...

Vo Van Hoai shared: “The seasons of blooming flowers, the season of longan fruit, the season of fragrant jackfruit in the garden… are my childhood, my hometown. Especially the longan trees, each year my family harvests more than 30 tons, but when the wind and storms blow the trees down, they are only used as firewood. It has been a concern of mine throughout my youth. That is why I want to return to my hometown to produce handicraft products from these local trees.”

After more than 1 year of starting a business, the Tan Nhat Son Production - Trade - Service Cooperative of the 9X guy has now created jobs for 6 local workers. The kitchen appliances made from Tien Phuoc wood after completion are packaged and brought to Binh Duong, especially popular in Korea.

Tan Nhat Son dishes

Wishing to strongly promote trade and develop products on e-commerce platforms in the future, Mr. Hoai strives to bring his Tan Nhat Son dishes to the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program. At the end of 2024, with the attention of authorities at all levels, support from local people and dedication to each product, the dishes made from acacia and rosewood of the Tien Chau boy were recognized as meeting the 3-star OCOP standard.

To complete a standard set of dishes, Mr. Hoai ordered a team to purchase trees, taking raw materials from trees grown in Tien Phuoc district. He invested nearly 250 million VND in his wood workshop with machinery such as blank cutting machines, parasol machines, copying lathes, sanding and polishing machines... Each month, Tan Nhat Son Production - Trade - Service Cooperative Group produces an average of 1,000 sets of dishes at a cost of 55,000 VND/set.

“In addition to the local wood source, my Tan Nhat Son handicraft products also feature exclusive vegetable paint. I always prioritize health safety because my products are used for eating and drinking. I have thoroughly researched vegetable paint extracted from natural sources such as sweet potato leaves, gac fruit... and have the products thoroughly tested for food safety.”

According to Mr. Hoai, because it is a vegetable paint, the product will fade after about 1 year of use. Therefore, within 1 year, customers can bring the product to his facility for warranty or when selling the product, the user will be given a paint bottle to clean the product to make it new.

However, the 9X guy still worries about how his products can meet the needs of local customers because the price is still quite high. He wishes: "Anyone who has wood will bring it to my workshop for processing. There are many types of wood such as longan, acacia, and mother of pearl in Tien Phuoc, people can use products from the trees they grow, reuse the fruits of their own labor."

[VIDEO] - Mr. Vo Van Hoai shares about OCOP 3 Tan Nhat Son dishes:

The good news is that the 11cm diameter bowl sets and 16cm diameter plates are meticulously crafted from the wood selection stage, to each cut, and the safe paint color is popular in the land of kimchi...
