Former President Sam Nujoma, revered for leading Namibia to independence from South Africa in 1990, died at the age of 95 on February 8.

On February 9, the Office of Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba announced that Namibia's founding leader, former President Sam Nujoma, had passed away at the age of 95 the day before.
For the past three weeks, former President Nujoma has been hospitalized in the capital Windhoek for medical treatment and observation due to his old age and poor health.
Many world leaders have sent their condolences to the late President's family, as well as to the Government and people of Namibia.
Former President Nujoma is revered in his native Namibia as a father figure, a leader who brought the country to democracy and stability.
While in office, President Sam Nujoma paid an official friendly visit to Vietnam in July 2002.
He was awarded the "Friendship Medal" by then President Tran Duc Luong for his active contributions to the struggle for independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people and to strengthening and developing the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
