Young players are not allowed to play, U.23 Vietnam is at a big disadvantage

The most worrying thing for Mr. Troussier is probably the striker position because this position is often reserved for foreign players by V-League teams. Perhaps that is why when answering the Japanese press recently, Mr. Troussier frankly said that Vietnamese football does not have good strikers.

Looking back at the starting lineup of the teams in round 9 of the V-League 2023 - 2024 and the first division taking place on February 17 and 18, the strikers that Mr. Troussier considered the main players in U.23 Vietnam such as Nguyen Van Tung (Hanoi Club), Nguyen Thanh Nhan (PVF-CAND) did not play. If Thanh Nhan was injured and out for a long time, Van Tung would not even be on the list of the capital team in the match against Thanh Hoa. Meanwhile, the player considered the "king of the youth tournament" Nguyen Quoc Viet of HAGL only played until the 56th minute before being sent off. The rare young striker who played the full 90 minutes was Bui Vi Hao of Binh Duong. However, this player missed too many scoring opportunities for the home team in front of the Quang Nam team's goal.

Thai Son (right) is a rare young player who made a remarkable mark in round 9 of the V-League.

The young striker that the French coach trusts the most, Nguyen Dinh Bac of the Quang Nam team, also cannot play due to a head injury after a collision during training, and is expected to miss about 2-3 matches.

Other players, although they were allowed to play, could not play the entire match, such as young defender Vo Minh Trong (Binh Duong) who played until the 70th minute and was replaced, while Phan Tuan Tai (Viettel The Cong) had to wait until the second half to be put on the field by coach Duc Thang in the match against Khanh Hoa Club. Another talented young player of Viettel The Cong, midfielder Khuat Van Khang, also only played until the 70th minute.

A rare bright spot among the young players in the V-League is Nguyen Thai Son of Thanh Hoa Club. Thai Son has been playing more and more steadily and has become a pillar of the Thanh team in the fiercely competitive matches in the V-League. He is also one of the important factors helping the Thanh Hoa Club midfield block the excellent midfielders of Hanoi Club such as Hung Dung and Hai Long to help the home team win all 3 points.

Obviously, bright spots like Thai Son in the V-League are not enough to light the fire of hope for Coach Troussier as well as U.23 Vietnam at the upcoming U.23 Asian Cup, when the French coach's ambition in this tournament is very big. Being in the same group D with U.23 Malaysia, U.23 Uzbekistan and U.23 Kuwait is considered very favorable for U.23 Vietnam, because teams in the same region like U.23 Thailand and U.23 Indonesia are in much harder groups.

In terms of the balance of power, Uzbekistan is predicted to be the number 1 candidate for the top spot in the group, while U.23 Malaysia and U.23 Kuwait are two opponents that are on par with Coach Troussier's team. However, if the young players of U.23 Vietnam are still not given more opportunities to play on the field, then even if they fall into a favorable group, it will not bring any benefits. Simply because, when they are not allowed to play on the field regularly, young players will lose their sense of the ball and especially will not have enough physical strength to compete in 90 intense minutes on the field in a continental tournament.
