On the afternoon of December 13, in Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province, the National Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Central Highlands Agricultural and Forestry Sciences Institute and Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company to organize a conference to review the smart coffee cultivation program adapting to climate change for the 2024-2025 crop year.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Ngo Van Dong, General Director of Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, said that coffee is the second most important agricultural export product after rice and that in 2024, the export turnover is expected to reach 5.5 billion USD. However, coffee development is not sustainable, fertilizer investment still accounts for a high proportion of the cost and changes when the market fluctuates.

Coffee prices increase, people increase fertilizer, prices decrease, fertilizer is reduced, not following the instructions of agricultural extension and scientists, gardening is unsustainable, diseases, especially soil-borne diseases, increase dramatically, making coffee productivity and quality unstable, the area that needs to be replanted increases.

A recent common phenomenon is the intercropping of coffee with other crops, especially fruit trees such as durian, avocado and industrial trees such as rubber, pepper, etc., but there is no suitable cultivation process for the intercropping system.

Based on the current situation of coffee production, following the success of the Smart Rice Cultivation Program in the Mekong Delta , the results of which have been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as technical advances and are being widely applied in the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta; Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company has launched the "Smart Coffee Cultivation Program to Adapt to Climate Change for the 2023-2026 period".

The program aims to develop a smart coffee cultivation process that adapts to climate change and is applicable to the Central Highlands region, reducing costs, increasing productivity, quality and economic efficiency in coffee cultivation, aiming at sustainable coffee development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The program is accompanied by the National Agricultural Extension Center, the Central Highlands Agricultural and Forestry Science and Technology Institute, and the Agricultural Extension Centers of the five Central Highlands provinces, along with many experts in the company's Science and Technology Council.

With the above goal, in the 2024-2025 crop year, the program has been officially implemented in five Central Highlands provinces: Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum. With a scientific and practical approach, the program has collected 200 soil samples to analyze over 2,300 agricultural chemical indicators, conducted surveys on over 500 coffee-producing households to assess the current status of soil health, and the farming processes being applied by people in three popular farming systems today: pure coffee, coffee intercropped with pepper and coffee intercropped with durian. Based on secondary data from specialized agencies along with soil sample analysis results and analysis of farmers' farming processes, the program has developed a farming process to deploy in 15 models in the provinces using new fertilizer products from Binh Dien such as: soil improvement fertilizers, fertilizers with added microorganisms, etc.

According to the preliminary evaluation results of the participants, the models achieved quite good results, the productivity and economic efficiency of durian production increased. With coffee and pepper, although not yet harvested, the quality of the gardens has improved, and it is forecasted that productivity and efficiency will also increase...
