Every year, about 59,000 people die from rabies worldwide, of which more than 90% of deaths are due to dog bites.

According to information from Hanoi Children's Hospital, the facility has just received a case of an 8-year-old boy who was bitten by a dog and had to be hospitalized with multiple soft tissue injuries, including injuries to his right ear, scalp, right arm and many other locations on his body.

Rabies is one of the dangerous infectious diseases that can cause death if not treated promptly.

Doctors said the child almost lost his right ear due to serious damage, but thanks to timely intervention by doctors, his ear was preserved.

Upon admission, the child was diagnosed with severe injuries to his right ear, with a near-complete rupture of the auricle, avulsion of the cartilage of the external auditory canal, auricular cartilage, and a 2.5 cm portion of the skin bridge at the earlobe. In addition, the child also had many deep wounds from dog bites on the scalp, right arm, and other parts of the body. The longest laceration was up to 5 cm.

According to the family, while playing at the grandmother's house, the child was bitten by the family's dog. The family immediately took the child to Chuong My Hospital, where first aid was given, the bleeding was temporarily stopped, and the child was quickly transferred to Hanoi Children's Hospital for further treatment.

Doctor Hung Anh, Department of General Surgery, Hanoi Children's Hospital said, when receiving the patient, we conducted emergency tests and performed surgery immediately.

The doctors removed the crushed part, sutured the cartilage of the external auditory canal and the cartilage of the ear, and reconnected the blood vessels using microsurgery techniques. After the surgery, the patient's ear shape was stable, the ear was pink, warm, and no longer purple.

In addition, the wounds on the head and arms were irrigated, debrided and sutured. After surgery, the patient recovered quickly, his general condition was stable and the surgical wounds were being carefully cared for. The patient continued to be treated with antibiotics, and vaccinated against rabies and tetanus to prevent dangerous complications.

Doctor Hung Anh warned that dog bites are not uncommon, especially among children. Children are often curious and easily attracted to animals without realizing the dangers they pose. Dog bites can cause serious damage, not only to the body but also to dangerous diseases such as rabies.

Rabies is a dangerous infectious disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly. Rabies is transmitted mainly through the bite of an infected animal, especially a dog. The rabies virus affects the central nervous system, causing encephalitis and can lead to death if not vaccinated promptly after being bitten.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 59,000 people die from rabies each year, with more than 90% of deaths due to dog bites. In Vietnam, the number of rabies cases has been on the rise in recent years, and children are the most vulnerable.

To prevent rabies and dog bites, experts recommend vaccinating dogs: This is the most effective preventive measure to protect humans from the risk of rabies. Pet dogs need to be vaccinated against rabies regularly, as recommended by veterinarians.

Supervise children around dogs: Children should be instructed on how to handle and not play with dogs, especially dogs that are unvaccinated or exhibit unusual behavior.

Be careful when bitten by a dog: If bitten by a dog, quickly wash the wound with soap and clean water, then go to the nearest medical facility for advice and timely rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccination after a bite can effectively prevent rabies if given within 24 hours of the bite.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tuan Hai, Safpo/Potec Vaccination System, rabies is a disease with an almost absolute mortality rate if not treated promptly. Therefore, rabies vaccination for people bitten by dogs and vaccination for pet dogs is the safest and most effective measure to protect public health.

Dog bites and rabies are dangers that cannot be ignored, especially for children. Parents need to be vigilant and proactive in taking preventive measures. When an accident occurs, the child must be taken to a medical facility immediately for timely treatment to avoid serious health and mental consequences.
