On the morning of January 17, Israeli media reported that representatives of Israel, the Islamic Hamas Movement, the United States and Qatar officially signed an agreement to release hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.
Citing two informed sources, the Jerusalem Post stated that the signing ceremony took place in Doha (Qatar) after reports that the Israeli government would postpone the plenary session to vote on the issue from January 17 to January 18. Therefore, the release of the first three hostages will be postponed from January 19 to January 20.
According to the sources, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed of the agreement. A government meeting to approve the relevant plan will take place after the meeting of the Political-Security Cabinet.
Previously, on January 15, Egypt, Qatar and the US issued a joint statement on the ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said the deal would consist of three phases, starting on January 19. The first phase would last 42 days, during which the Israeli army would withdraw from densely populated areas and the two sides would exchange hostages.
According to a VNA correspondent in the Middle East-North Africa, on January 16, Egypt's Al-Qahera News TV channel reported that a delegation including representatives of the army and the Israeli General Security Service (Shin Bet) will arrive in Cairo on January 17 to coordinate with Egypt in implementing the newly reached ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
On the same day, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had a phone call with his US counterpart Antony Blinken to discuss the ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Secretary Blinken emphasized the important role of Egyptian President El-Sisi in pushing for the agreement, and appreciated Cairo's intensive mediation efforts in the Gaza conflict.
For his part, his Egyptian counterpart Abdelatty stressed the importance of the immediate implementation of the agreement, including the ceasefire and hostage exchange, and called on all parties to fully comply with the terms and duration of the ceasefire agreement.
The head of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry also stressed the urgency of expanding the scale of humanitarian aid provision across Gaza in the coming period and called for stepping up international efforts to support the reconstruction of this narrow strip of land on the Mediterranean coast, including rebuilding infrastructure and the health system.
Also on January 16, speaking at a press conference, US Secretary of State Blinken expressed confidence that the ceasefire in Gaza would begin to be implemented on January 19.
