Commercial snakehead fish farming
Previously, Nguyen Van Tien's family's economy faced difficulties due to limited land for production. In 2014, Tien and some neighbors in the neighborhood were given the opportunity by the local government to attend a technical training class on raising snakehead fish in tarpaulin tanks.
The new knowledge gained has created the premise to help Mr. Tien develop a snakehead fish farming model locally.
Mr. Tien said: “Through the class, I learned how to make a tarpaulin tank with enough space and ventilation. At the same time, it helped equip me with knowledge in choosing food and choosing good breeds. I have applied the knowledge from the class very successfully…
From there, I boldly invested in building more tanks for fish farming. At the same time, I proactively bought more fish fry, took advantage of the garden area near my house to renovate and build tarpaulin tanks to develop fish farming" - Mr. Tien shared.
Raising fish in tarpaulin tanks has many advantages over traditional farming methods. Mr. Tien said that thanks to daily water changes, the farming environment is kept clean and the fish are less likely to get sick.
In addition, thanks to being fed with industrial food, the bad smell is limited, and the food is more proactive than feeding the fish with natural food. On the other hand, fish raised in tanks gain weight quickly, can be harvested after about 6 months, each fish weighs from 300 - 800 grams.
In 2017, with the support of the Long Kien Commune Farmers' Association, Mr. Tien and a number of snakehead fish farming households in the hamlet gathered to establish the Long Binh Snakehead Fish Association.
Kim Loan dried snakehead fish production facility in Long Kien commune, Cho Moi district, An Giang province creates jobs for many local workers. Snakehead fish farmers in Long Kien commune have additional income thanks to the closed model.
Currently, the number of fish tanks of the Association is nearly 50. There are 2 types: One type raises snakehead fish to sell to traders in the province, selling time is 6 months/time, profit is about 35 million VND/tank ( 50m2 ).
The second type raises fish to sell to traders from Ho Chi Minh City, selling once every 9 months, bringing in a profit of about 45 million VND/tank.
Development of dried snakehead fish products
With the development of snakehead fish farming, in 2016, in addition to selling commercial snakehead fish, Mr. Tien's family also took advantage of their quality snakehead fish source to dry fish to supply the domestic market.
This is also a very important turning point in the development process of the Kim Loan dried snakehead fish brand, which has now achieved the standard of "3-star OCOP product".
Sharing about the development process of dried snakehead fish products, Mr. Tien said that in 2015, the snakehead fish market encountered many difficulties, the price of commercial fish was low, and farmers were often oppressed by traders in terms of output.
Given the above situation, Mr. Tien’s family struggled to find a new way. After some thought, Mr. Tien decided to dry snakehead fish to sell to the market, instead of just raising fish as before.
“My family bought dried snakehead fish from many reputable local establishments to try. From there, we researched the recipe for making dried snakehead fish for our family,” Mr. Tien added.
Kim Loan dried snakehead fish, Long Kien commune, Cho Moi district, An Giang province is being welcomed by the market.
The first products were born, Mr. Tien's family gave them to friends and relatives to try. Receiving positive reviews, as well as sincere suggestions to perfect the product, Mr. Tien finally decided to establish Kim Loan snakehead fish drying facility.
Products are also tested, registered for food safety and hygiene conditions, issued QR codes, registered for intellectual property, and expanded consumer markets...
The efforts of Mr. Tien's family have reaped "sweet fruit", dried snakehead fish products with the Kim Loan brand have "covered" many localities in and outside An Giang province.
The types of dried snakehead fish produced by the facility are well received by consumers such as: Whole dried snakehead fish, shredded dried snakehead fish, dried snakehead fish cheeks, dried snakehead fish tongue... prices range from 150,000-350,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
From producing various types of dried snakehead fish, Mr. Tien's family has earned a profit of nearly 800 million VND/year.
Thanks to the model of raising snakehead fish in tarpaulin tanks and producing dried fish, Mr. Tien's family's life has improved. The house has been renovated, means of transport have been purchased, the cost of sending children to school has been invested, and money has been actively contributed to social welfare.
In addition, Mr. Tien's family also creates jobs for many local workers, with an income of 3 - 4 million VND/month. The work does not require fixed hours, so workers can proactively manage household chores.
“Currently, in my hamlet, there are many families in difficult circumstances who are in dire need of capital support. Just raising 1 or 2 snakehead fish tanks will bring in tens of millions of dong in profit after 1 year. Raising snakehead fish and then drying them for sale is a very effective poverty reduction model, with high profits, and needs to be replicated to develop the local economy. At the same time, the model contributes to sustainable poverty reduction,” Mr. Tien shared.
