According to a VNA reporter in Kuala Lumpur, TasteAtlas - a website known as the "world culinary map" - has just announced a list of the 50 best street foods in the world, in which Vietnamese banh mi ranks 7th on this list.
Depending on each region, area, and locality, Vietnamese bread will have different ingredients and processing methods. TasteAtlas said that Vietnamese bread was originally only stuffed with meat and some spices, without vegetables. However, today, with the ability to be infinitely varied, Vietnamese bread is also stuffed with cold cuts, French butter, fresh mayonnaise, liver pate, cucumber, coriander, pickles, oyster sauce, garlic... The bread must be light, with a thin crust while the inside is soft and chewy, with a slight sweetness.
Topping TasteAtlas’ list of the world’s 50 best street foods is the Guotie, a northern Chinese dumpling typically filled with minced pork, shredded cabbage, green onions, ginger, rice wine, and sesame oil.
Roti Canai, a popular Malaysian breakfast dish, has been named the second best street food in the world. Roti Cana is a pan-fried flatbread popular in Malaysia, made from flour, water, eggs and fat. The dough is folded over and over to form layers, giving it a soft, fluffy texture on the inside and a crispy exterior. It is popular not only for its delicious taste but also for its convenience - it is perfect for breakfast. It is often served with curry chicken, fish, some vegetables or simply with condensed milk and sugar.
Next on the list is the Spanish dish Espetos.
Numbers 4 and 5 on the list both belong to Mexican dishes, Tacos and Carnitas respectively.
Ranked 6th on the list of the world’s best street foods is Japanese Karaage. This dish is famous for its unique frying technique. Karaage is often used to prepare chicken. The chicken is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, sake and sugar, then coated with arrowroot starch and deep-fried.
TasteAtlas is also considered the world's most prestigious travel guide to traditional cuisine, with a list of more than 10,000 foods and drinks from around the world. The recipes posted on this website have been highly appreciated by food critics and journalists.
