Learning tailoring but not having a lasting relationship with needles and thread, Vo Van Son, 46 years old, in Binh Dinh, switched to farming, succeeded with a billion-dollar chicken farm, and became one of the 100 best farmers in the country.
Success does not come naturally
Mr. Vo Hoang Son (Phuoc Nghia commune, Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh) is a typical example of the determination to overcome difficulties and become a good businessman in the locality.

According to Mr. Son, in 2000, he learned a trade to become a tailor, but the tailoring profession was increasingly out of fashion in rural areas, so he did not stick with needles and thread for long; instead, he focused on helping his family raise poultry.
"I switched to raising chickens because I saw that the sewing profession was "losing its position" at that time. People started to prefer industrially made, fashionable clothes that were cheaper," said Mr. Son.
In 2007, Mr. Son pooled all his savings and borrowed capital from the Commune Farmers' Support Fund and the Tuy Phuoc District Social Policy Bank to start a business with a model of producing breeding chickens.
Thanks to his experience in helping his family raise chickens, Mr. Son succeeded from the first batch of healthy chickens. Just 1 year later, Mr. Son rented an additional 2,000m2 of land to build a barn to raise 2,000 parent chickens.
Along with that, Mr. Son gradually upgraded the system of 2 incubators with modern technology, with a productivity of over 50,000 eggs/machine. Currently, Mr. Son's family's hatchery facility generates an annual profit of over 1 billion VND.
"At first, I raised meat chickens but saw the high demand for breeding chickens so I did more research. At that time, I didn't create any breeds, mainly taking eggs from local households so the efficiency was not high, the resistance of the breeding chickens was weak. After that, I researched and created more effective chicken breeds, the process of selecting a satisfactory breed of chicken also took 5-7 years," said Mr. Son.
In addition to supplying breeding chickens, since 2015, realizing the high demand for bird's nests, Mr. Son invested billions to build 2 bird's nest houses in the locality. The income from bird's nests is over 150 million VND per year.
"If not affected by Covid-19, my family would earn an average of over 1.5 billion VND per year, creating jobs for dozens of local workers. Sometimes I don't think I would have achieved what I have today, but thinking back, no success comes naturally," Mr. Son confided.
Help farmers escape poverty sustainably
According to Mr. Son, to achieve this success, he constantly studies, researches, and accumulates experience from many channels; visits good models to learn from experience; strictly adheres to environmental sanitation measures in livestock farming, disease prevention, etc.
However, Mr. Son also said that livestock farming is like farming, "when the harvest is good, the price goes down". Livestock farmers are facing difficulties due to high feed prices, while chicken prices are low. Livestock farmers are not interested, which affects the farms that supply chicken breeds.
"A chicken from raising to selling costs 55,000 VND, but when it is sold for only 45,000 VND, no one would be foolish enough to raise it. Before, on average I sold 2,000 chickens a day, but now I only sell 300," said Mr. Son.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep, President of the Farmers' Association of Phuoc Nghia commune, Mr. Son is not only a good economic example, but also a typical farmer in the new rural construction movement and social charity work in the locality.
Many local households were enthusiastically advised by Mr. Son on how to raise and care for chickens. Mr. Son also supported 10 disadvantaged households with loans of an average of 10-20 million VND/household without interest to invest in production, thereby helping 5 poor and near-poor households escape poverty sustainably.
In addition, Mr. Son also pioneered in donating 100m2 of rice field to concretize the canals in the fields. Every year, he contributes at least 15 million VND to the local gratitude fund and scholarship fund.
With the above results, in 2022, Mr. Son was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in the movement of good farmers in production and business in the period of 2017-2022. In particular, Mr. Son was also honored to be recognized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union as one of the 100 outstanding Vietnamese farmers in 2023.
