NDO - Every year, late in the evening of December 29, Environmental Team 5, Hanoi Urban Environment One Member Co., Ltd., Dong Da branch, spends time sitting together around a New Year's Eve dinner on... the sidewalk.
At 7 pm on the 29th of Tet, workers of Environmental Team 5, Hanoi Urban Environment One Member Co., Ltd., Dong Da branch, were still busy with their work on the street.
According to Ms. Ngo Thi Quang, Team Leader of Team 5, from December 23 to the night of December 30, the amount of trash increases every day. As Tet approaches, the workload increases. "There are days when we have to work until dawn to finish the job," Ms. Quang said.
During the peak period of serving the Lunar New Year, Environmental Team 5 has gradually become accustomed to working late. “On the night of the 30th, there will be even more work. But we have been doing it for so long that we have become accustomed to it,” Ms. Quang said while diligently sweeping the street.
Withered peach blossoms are left by people on heavily loaded garbage trucks.
At 8 pm, the temperature outside is only about 13 degrees Celsius. But environmental workers are still working hard to keep the city green, clean and beautiful.
As of today, Ms. Quang has worked in the environmental industry for 21 years. "Only one year I had an accident and... I was able to celebrate Tet at home. The other 20 years, I celebrated New Year's Eve on the street with a broom and trash can," the female team leader said with a laugh.
At nearly 9pm, when they had a break, the whole group gathered together on the sidewalk. At this time, a simple New Year's Eve meal was set up right on the deserted sidewalk.
"We sisters each come from different hometowns but share the same hardships as environmental sanitation workers, so we share and see each other as sisters in the family. There is only one day left until Lunar New Year, so we take advantage of the late night work to gather here to cook and chat after a year of hard work," said Team Leader Quang.
The "dining table" was made from a few old styrofoam boxes, covered with a tarp. Each person brought a chair. In just 10 minutes, the New Year's Eve meal for the environmental workers on the 29th of Tet was ready.
Food was also assigned by the brothers and sisters in the group to bring. Some brought a bunch of washed water spinach, others brought banh chung, beef, chicken... Together, they had a decent New Year's Eve meal...
The New Year's Eve dinner on the 29th of Tet was simple but full of laughter.
Wish each other strong legs, soft stones...
Simple joys between shifts on the streets on the eve of Tet. The New Year's Eve meal on the 29th of Tet has become a "small tradition" of Team 5.
When asked what they wish for in the new year, Ms. Quang said, we just need to receive a few words of encouragement from people such as New Year greetings and sharing work, and that's enough to make us happy.
After this communal meal, the group will disperse, pushing the carts into the night. The wind is still blowing in the last night of the year…
