According to Kerala state officials, in addition to the four students killed, 64 others were injured in the incident that occurred on the evening of November 25.

The Indian Express reported that more than 2,000 people, including students from other colleges and local residents, were estimated to be at the venue before the stampede broke out. Witnesses and police officers at the scene said singer Nikhita Gandhi had planned to perform at the university's auditorium. When it started to rain, the crowd waiting outside the only entrance rushed into the auditorium, causing people inside to fall down the steps, leading to the stampede.

The auditorium, which can accommodate up to 1,500 people, was partially full at that time. CUSAT Vice-Chancellor Dr PG Sankaran said that the program was organized, managed and controlled by the students themselves with the support of 6 police officers. This was the first year the school organized it after the pandemic.

Soon after, the Kerala state cabinet rushed to the spot and held an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation. According to officials, all hospitals in Kochi have been put on alert and doctors have been called in to treat the victims.
