According to a VNA reporter in Ottawa, on April 21, an online conference with the theme "Development of Vietnam's country and people after 48 years of national reunification" organized by the Canada - Vietnam Friendship Association in Toronto attracted about 45 scholars and experts in many fields in Canada.
The liberation of the South and reunification of the country, marked by the victory on April 30, 1975, was reviewed by speaker Philip Fernandez, on behalf of the Canada - Vietnam Friendship Association, as a major event. He said that this was the beginning of Vietnam's successes today, and also reviewed Vietnam's proud achievements in many fields, especially economics, diplomacy and human development in line with the goals of the United Nations (UN). Attending the conference as a speaker, Vietnamese Consul General in Vancouver Nguyen Quang Trung reviewed the hardships that Vietnam had to go through after reunification to affirm Vietnam's economic and foreign affairs achievements recognized by international friends today. These are extraordinary efforts of the Vietnamese people, under the wise leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Vietnam has continuously achieved an economic growth rate of 6-8% since the beginning of the millennium. Notably, during the pandemic, Vietnam's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth remained above 8%, the highest growth rate in the past 10 years. Vietnam continues to maintain friendly relations with all countries in the world, having twice assumed the role of non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Vietnam has always been an active member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and has made responsible contributions to world peace, stability and prosperity.
In addition to economic and foreign affairs achievements, Vietnam has also implemented very good policies for overseas Vietnamese. In an interview with a VNA reporter, Ms. Dinh Kim Nguyet, a Vietnamese expatriate in Vancouver, said: "We are among those who are benefiting from Vietnam's new policies that are becoming more and more reasonable, creating conditions for us to visit and live in Vietnam more easily and frequently. These are the visa exemption policy and permanent residence card, the law on repatriation for overseas Vietnamese and always supporting traditional educational and cultural activities for overseas Vietnamese such as our Vietnamese Books for Vietnamese Children in Canada program". The workshop is part of a series of events planned by the Canada-Vietnam Friendship Association to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Canada friendship relations (1973-2023). Vietnam and Canada have had a friendly and effective cooperative relationship for many years. In 2022, despite the negative impact of the pandemic, trade turnover between Vietnam and Canada still reached more than CAD 10 billion (over USD 7.3 billion) and Vietnam became Canada's largest trading partner among ASEAN countries. Vietnam and Canada celebrated the 5th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership last year and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.
