Trekking through the forest, conquering mountain peaks, watching flowers, and hunting clouds are suitable adventurous experiences in the first days of the year.
In spring, trekking routes in the forest combined with mountain climbing in the North are attracting many tourists. The weather is nice, no longer too cold, flowers are blooming, the forests are green, some places can still hunt clouds are the reasons why these experiences are of interest. The trekking spots below are suggested by Mr. Manh Chien, a tour guide specializing in guiding tourists trekking in the northern mountainous regions.
Samu Peak
Top Sa Mu - U Bo (commonly known as Sa Mu peak) has an altitude of 2,756 m above sea level. This is a newly discovered mountain peak and was crowned in December 2022, located about 100 km from Son La city, on the border of Son La and Yen Bai, belongs to Ta Xua special-use forest. Sa Mu peak has two ways up from Xim Vang or Hang Dong.
The Sa Mu trekking route will go through a typical primeval forest with diverse flora such as moss, ancient trees, rhododendrons, maple leaves, bamboo forests, many streams and waterfalls. The higher you go, the more beautiful the forest on both sides of the road to Sa Mu becomes. March and April are the seasons of rhododendrons and hawthorn flowers.
Putaleng Peak
Pu Ta Leng Peak, part of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, is located in Tam Duong district, about 20 km from Lai Chau city. Pu Ta Leng is 3,049 m high, the third highest peak explored in Vietnam, after Fansipan (3,143 m, Lao Cai) and Pu Si Lung (3,083 m, Lai Chau), according to the Lai Chau Provincial Information Portal.
In addition to the characteristic dense forest with many ancient trees, the low forest floor has a lot of bamboo and cardamom, this place also attracts mountain climbing enthusiasts when from March every year, colorful rhododendrons bloom in the high forest floor. The road to the top from Si Thau Chai village is where you can see the most colorful rhododendrons.
Ta Lien Son Peak
Ta Lien Son 2,996 m high, located between Lai Chau and Lao Cai. Currently, the trekking route chosen by many people starts from Tam Duong district, Lai Chau. Tourists can take a bus to Sa Pa, rent a motorbike, then move to the foot of the mountain, or take the Hanoi - Lai Chau route, stop at Ta Leng commune, hire a motorbike taxi to take them to the trekking point.
The journey to conquer Ta Lien peak usually takes two days and one night. The forest in Ta Lien is still quite wild, with hundreds of years old trees covered in moss. In March and April, there are many rhododendrons blooming here and in October, the maple trees turn red and yellow.
Ta Chi Nhu Peak
Ta Chi Nhu Considered the "roof" of Yen Bai province, with an altitude of 2,979 m, it is famous for its chi pau flowers that bloom in early winter. In spring, the mountain top surprises many people with its white hawthorn forest.
The Ta Chi Nhu climb usually starts from the Mo Chi area of Xa Ho commune early in the morning. The time to climb to the top is about 6-8 hours for a distance of 10 km. There is also a climb in the direction of Nam Nghiep because the road is more beautiful, passing through simple villages, rich terrain and easy to see flowers.
Lung Cung Peak
Offering 2,913 m high, in district Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai, is in the top 15 highest peaks in Vietnam. In recent years, Lung Cung has attracted a large number of mountain climbing and trekking enthusiasts due to its beautiful terrain, short climbing routes with moderate difficulty. This is also a place to hunt clouds, where you can watch both beautiful sunsets and sunrises amidst the sea of clouds.
Visitors can trek from three different directions from Lung Cung, Tu San and Thao Chua Chai villages to reach the top. Here, November and December are the season of maple leaves changing color and wild sunflowers. January and March are the seasons of peach blossoms and hawthorn flowers. The sea of clouds is usually present all year round, but is easiest to hunt from October to April.
