YouTube stops streaming high-quality videos on web browsers in Russia

Specifically, high-quality videos are not played on Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, Mi Browser (Xiaomi's web browser). Meanwhile, the mobile Safari browser takes users to the YouTube app.

YouTube's outage, which began on August 1, affected users on iOS and Android. High-quality videos are still playing on the Yandex browser and the desktop version of Safari.

Earlier, Russian telecommunications operator Rostelecom reported technical problems with the Google-owned platform used on the operator's network infrastructure, which could affect YouTube traffic in Russia.

Rostelecom said YouTube was warned about potential technical problems related to traffic speeds on July 12, adding that Google (YouTube's owner) was responsible for the technical problems because in 2022 it abandoned the expansion and upgrade of its equipment in Russia.

In March 2022, YouTube disabled its Premium subscription option for Russians. After Russia launched a special campaign in Ukraine, the video platform suspended monetization for Russian content creators, while Google disabled contextual advertising for Russians from its search engine.
