Luong Xuan Truong had an assist for Lucao to score early in the second half, but that was not enough to help Hai Phong avoid a 1-3 defeat against visiting team Nam Dinh in round 9 of V-League 2023-2024.

Xuan Truong's moment came when Hai Phong was trailing Nam Dinh 3-0 after only the first half. Consecutive mistakes in the defensive system caused Hai Phong's frontline players, including Xuan Truong, to not be able to correct their teammates' mistakes despite trying their best.

In the 5th minute, the team led by coach Vu Hong Viet scored the opening goal. From a pass from a Nam Dinh player, Tran Van Dat entered the penalty area and eliminated Nguyen Van Minh and goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu with a delicate diagonal shot.

However, the difference between Nam Dinh and the home team is that they have a pair of quality foreign players, Hendrio and Rafaelson. In the 16th minute, from a pass from Hendrio, Rafaelson escaped and was fouled by Dang Van Toi of Hai Phong in the 16m50 box. Referee Nguyen Trung Kien, after consulting VAR, awarded a penalty to Nam Dinh, and Hendrio successfully converted to raise the score to 2-0.

The 3-goal gap was established by Nam Dinh in the 38th minute. Rafaelson assisted Ho Khac Ngoc to run down, then the midfielder from Nghe An chipped the ball past goalkeeper Dinh Trieu. Initially, referee Kien did not award the goal because of offside, but VAR intervened and confirmed the goal was valid for Khac Ngoc.

In the second half, Nam Dinh proactively slowed down the pace of the match, while Hai Phong continued to push up their formation. The home team's efforts were rewarded in the 56th minute, with Xuan Truong's assist for Lucao to score an honorary goal, ending the 1-3 defeat.

The victory in Hai Phong helped Nam Dinh consolidate their top position with 22 points, 5 points ahead of second-placed Binh Duong. Meanwhile, Hai Phong is stuck in 7th place with 11 points, at risk of being overtaken by the following group if they get good results in the late matches on February 18.
