With the advancement of modern medicine, prenatal genetic screening methods help detect abnormalities early, reducing the rate of children born with congenital diseases.

Congenital abnormalities are one of the leading causes of death in newborns. With the advancement of modern medicine, prenatal genetic screening methods help detect abnormalities early, reduce the rate of children born with congenital diseases, and help parents have the best preparation.

Proactive genetic testing not only helps protect children's health, but is also an important preparation step to help parents plan to have healthy, happy children.

One typical example is the case of pregnant woman VTG (24 years old, Bac Giang). After performing genetic screening test at Medlatec, the results showed that both husband and wife carried the Thalassemia gene.

This condition increases the risk of giving birth to children with congenital hemolytic disease, and can even cause fetal hydrops or stillbirth. After performing a Thalassemia gene test and amniocentesis, doctors determined that the fetus had Hb Bart's Thalassemia, with a poor prognosis.

Therefore, the doctor advised abortion to protect the mother's health, and recommended that the family consider using pre-implantation embryo screening in subsequent pregnancies.

According to MSc.BSNT Pham Minh Duc, Genetics Department, Medlatec Testing Center, Thalassemia is the most common genetic disease in the world, especially in Vietnam.

The rate of people carrying this disease gene in our country is up to 13%, in which some ethnic groups have a higher rate of carrying the gene, even reaching 30-40%. If both husband and wife carry the gene, each pregnancy has a 25% chance of giving birth to a sick child, a 50% chance of giving birth to a healthy child carrying the gene, and only a 25% chance of giving birth to a healthy child.

According to the Ministry of Health, every year in Vietnam, more than 41,000 children are born with birth defects, of which 80% of these cases come from completely healthy couples.

Many parents are unaware that they carry a recessive disease gene, and when combined with the disease gene from their partner, it can lead to the birth of a child with a genetic disease. Common genetic diseases in Vietnam include Thalassemia, G6PD deficiency, Phenylketonuria, etc.

Dr. Pham Minh Duc shared that these genetic diseases often leave serious consequences, significantly affecting the quality of life of the patient and their family. Treatment is long-term, expensive and can become an economic burden for the family.

To reduce the risk of having a child with a genetic disease, experts recommend that couples should perform genetic testing before pregnancy or when planning to have children.

Testing methods such as karyotype testing, latent gene testing, Double Test, Triple Test, or NIPT can help detect potential genetic diseases early.

In particular, for families where both husband and wife carry genetic disease genes, medical experts recommend screening and reproductive counseling before pregnancy.

Couples can opt for assisted reproductive techniques such as preimplantation embryo diagnosis to ensure the birth of healthy children and reduce the risk of genetic diseases.

Proactive genetic testing not only helps protect children's health, but is also an important preparation step to help parents plan to have healthy, happy children.
