South Koreans have been "pouring money" to travel abroad as soon as COVID-19 prevention measures have been mostly lifted and the epidemic safety situation has been consolidated.

The results of the analysis of consumption data of overseas tourism-related industries from January 1 to May 15, announced by KB Kookmin Card on May 29, showed that the revenue of major overseas tourism-related industries such as travel agencies, airlines, and duty-free shops increased by 409%, 150%, and 88%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2022.

By continent, Asia accounted for the highest share of air ticket purchases during the above period with 81%, Europe accounted for 8%, and the Americas and Oceania each accounted for 5%.

Specifically, the highest rate of air ticket purchases to Asian countries and territories is Japan with 52%, Vietnam is second with 12%, followed by Thailand (10%), Philippines (9%), Taiwan (China) - 5%, Indonesia and China both account for 3%.

Following 2022, this year the proportion of tourism to Japan, Vietnam and Thailand still holds the highest position.

This year, the number of air ticket purchases by Korean tourists is increasing across all regions, but the region with the highest growth rate is Asia, up 192% year-on-year.

Among the Asian regions, due to the basic impact of low tourist arrivals last year, tourist arrivals to China recorded a surge of 1,634% and Taiwan increased by 923% year-on-year.

Japan and Vietnam - the two countries most visited by Korean tourists, still showed their attractiveness, with increases of 222% and 163% respectively.

In addition, during two three-day holidays in May, spending at restaurants, cafes and duty-free shops at Incheon International Airport increased by 340%, 319% and 218% respectively compared to the same period last year, reflecting the heat of overseas travel trends.

It can be seen that recently, besides trips to Asian countries, which are relatively short distances from Korea, trips to the Oceania region have also increased significantly as consumers take advantage of their vacations.

Data analysis shows that in Asia, Taiwan (China), Vietnam, Japan and Thailand are particularly popular destinations for Korean tourists, with increases of 319%, 227%, 193% and 172% respectively.

In the Oceania region, Guam Island recorded a 137% increase, Australia and New Zealand both grew at 55% and are new destinations attracting Korean tourists./.
