French Institute implements activities to support comic development in Vietnam

These activities include: connecting cooperation between French and Vietnamese authors in the field of comics, supporting Vietnamese authors and artists to improve their creativity, develop and distribute quality comics, and share experiences between French, Vietnamese and Cambodian publishers and translators.

Comic writing contest

The contest is organized in collaboration with Kim Dong Publishing House, for professional and non-professional authors who are Vietnamese citizens aged 18 and over, living, working and studying in and outside the country.

The deadline for submissions is June 1st to November 1st. The First Prize winner will receive a trip to France to participate in the Angoulême Comics Festival.

Master-class in comics

The French Institute in Vietnam and Kim Dong Publishing House organize a Master-class in comic creation under the guidance of famous French and Vietnamese artists: Maxime PÉROZ, Clément BALOUP, Ta Huy Long, Nguyen Thanh Phong.

At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to present a 6-10 page comic book project for publication. The program focuses on the fundamentals of art and creativity, as well as diversifying the use of graphics and storytelling.

Among the 58 candidates, 12 young talents from across the country were selected by the French-Vietnamese jury.

The event will take place from September 23-27 at Kim Dong Publishing House, 55 Quang Trung, Nguyen Du, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi .

Capacity building workshop for young comic translators from Vietnam and Cambodia

Translating comics requires a special skill set. To encourage young translators to enter this field, the program plans to organize 10 workshops with authors, illustrators and editors from France, along with translators from Vietnam and Cambodia to share their experiences. The workshops will include both theory and practice, both online and offline. Each student will have the opportunity to translate comics and exchange experiences with the translators who guide them. After the program, the works translated by the students will be published by the project's partner publishers.

The first workshops will take place from September 30 to October 2 at Kim Dong Publishing House, 55 Quang Trung, Hanoi.

Seminar for French - Vietnamese - Cambodian comic publishers

Responding to the need for training in comic book publishing among local publishers, the workshop will provide in-depth knowledge of comic book design and layout techniques, a field in which France has extensive experience.

The event will be held in Phnom Penh from 23-25 ​​October, with the support of the French International Publishing Bureau (BIEF). The conference will focus on perspectives and exchanges on comic book publishing in France, Vietnam and Cambodia. Many interesting topics will be discussed, including current trends, awards and bestsellers in France; as well as an overview of the diversity of French comics for both children and adults: fiction comics, graphic novels, documentary comics, adaptations of classics…

The program features French publishers and authors: Charlotte Moundlic, Artistic Director of Rue de Sèvre Publishing House; François Le Bescond, Publishing Director of Dargaud France; and Wandrille LEROY, author, comics editor and lecturer at the Delcourt Institute.

Fast-track at Angoulême Festival

Five publishers from Vietnam and Cambodia, along with a number of talented comic artists, will be invited to participate in the Festival d'Angoulême - the world's largest French-language comics festival in terms of reputation and scale. This event will give them the opportunity to discover the richness of French comics as well as the growing economic potential of this field.
