More importantly, Hang won the gold medal and broke the Southeast Asian record in the women's 400m freestyle S7 category. "I was also surprised by this achievement, because this was only my secondary competition. But thanks to that, I was able to feel comfortable when entering the competition and achieved good results," she said.

Girl of will

Vi Thi Hang made her mark on the first official competition day of the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia. In the morning, she won the gold medal in the 400m freestyle event with a time of 6 minutes 57.95 seconds, breaking the Southeast Asian record by 2 minutes 36.99 seconds (the old record was 9 minutes 34.94 seconds). In the afternoon, she excellently won another gold medal in the 100m freestyle event with a time of 1 minute 19.85 seconds. Hang's achievement also broke the current Southeast Asian record in this event of 1 minute 19.92 seconds.

Unfortunately paralyzed since childhood, Hang is known by many people for her always smiling face and optimistic outlook on life. Despite the difficulties in integrating into society with only two healthy hands, the girl from Dak Nong always demonstrates extraordinary determination and will to rise up.

She came to sports by chance but firmly. Proof of that is that the failure in the first two ASEAN Para Games could not make Hang falter. She still persevered in training until the third Games of her career in 2017 to get her first gold medal. And now at the age of 33, she continues to shine.

Know how to think for the future

As someone who always "acts for a better future", the large bonus from the gold medal at the tournament in Malaysia in 2017 was used by Hang to pay for tuition to attend a fashion course. After that, she boldly became a designer for her own fashion shop.

The job was quite stable, but Hang suddenly decided to stop to focus on sports. Since then, her swimming career has progressed steadily, continuously reaping gold medals at recent ASEAN Para Games. Especially at last year's games, Vi Thi Hang won 3 gold medals and broke 3 game records.

"I have been training with the Vietnamese swimming team for a long time for the 12th ASEAN Para Games. Although there have been few tournaments recently, I always try my best every day. I put my hopes in sports and swimming to have a better life," Hang said about today's achievement after setting a new record in Cambodia.

Along with swimming, Hang still worries about the future. She said: "I take advantage of my time to learn English and marketing. People with disabilities have many handmade products, but many of them have difficulty finding outlets. Therefore, I created a website to sell these products online. Thanks to my English, I have been able to sell my products abroad. This will be a solid foundation for my life after becoming an athlete."
