A small arched gate built of bricks and mortar leads visitors inside the ancient house. Along the path are two rows of white plum trees intertwined, providing shade for the entire area.
This building was built in 1883, the first owner was the 18th princess of King Duc Duc. After that, the house changed owners many times, mainly to royals, mandarins and the upper class in Hue.
The last mandarin to live in this house was Tuan Vu Nguyen Dinh Chi, in 1936. In 1940, Nguyen Dinh Chi left Hue, and his wife took over. Later, the house was passed on to his descendants.
In 2018, the descendants of Nguyen Dinh Chi, a mandarin living in France, decided to sell the entire garden house to a Hanoi businessman, and from there it was developed into a tourist destination.
Passing through the gate, entering the front of the house is a screen, with two double happiness characters carved on both sides and longevity character in the middle, meaning the screen acts as a shield to protect the house.
Behind the screen is a feng shui pond, according to the old concept, having water in front of the house will bring fortune to the homeowner.
Before entering the ancient house, visitors will step over the threshold in front of the house, with the meaning that when entering, visitors will look down at their footsteps and bow their heads, as if showing greeting and respect to the homeowner.
The garden house has 3 main rooms and 2 side rooms, the middle room is the place of worship, the 2 side rooms have a tea table and are used to receive guests.
This place still preserves many valuable antiques.
In addition to the unique architecture, the house still preserves Han-Nom characters from the time of kings Thanh Thai, Khai Dinh and Bao Dai.
Coming here, visitors will be able to admire the green, fresh beauty of the campus, admire the unique architecture of Hue garden houses.
After more than 140 years, this house still retains the ancient garden house architecture of Hue.
In particular, in the An Hien garden house area, there is also a French-style house, built by the wife of mandarin Nguyen Dinh Chi in 1954, used as a living space, avoiding affecting the main church.
"Each location in Hue creates its own unique feeling. An Hien garden house has a peaceful and quiet beauty. It has both an aristocratic appearance and traditional folk colors," said Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Tien (46 years old, tourist from Dong Nai).
An Hien Garden House is a cultural address, a familiar stop for tourists when coming to Hue.
