One day before the V-League Awards 2023 ceremony, the list of nominations for individual awards was revealed. The names mentioned for the titles of best player and best coach caused a lot of controversy and also had interesting details.
First of all, it must be said that this is a special season when the championship winning team does not have any representative on the nomination list for the season's individual awards. The top 3 best players, best young players and best coaches are all not members of the Hanoi Police Club.
Coach Popov was not nominated for best coach of the season.
However, the champion's absence in the Best Coach category is not controversial. This team changed coaches twice. They used coach Flavio Cruz to replace Paulo Foiani, then put technical director Tran Tien Dai in this position right before the final round (even though Mr. Dai was banned from coaching due to a penalty card).
The biggest controversy in the list of nominees for the best coach of the season is that coach Velizar Popov (Thanh Hoa) is not mentioned. The Bulgarian coach helped the Thanh team win the National Cup and compete for the championship until the end of the season (only losing hope of competing in the last 2 rounds).
It should be emphasized that the Thanh Hoa team is not highly rated compared to many teams behind such as Nam Dinh, Hai Phong, Binh Dinh. Coach Popov's mark in creating a team with the most attractive and dedicated playing style in the tournament is very clear.
Meanwhile, Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem and Hai Phong Club only ranked 6th. After the excellent foreign players of last season left, the port city team clearly declined compared to the runner-up achievement of V-League 2022. Hai Phong Club achieved 6 wins, 8 draws, 6 losses, scoring less goals than conceding.

Van Quyet is the "domestic top scorer" of V-League 2023 but was not nominated for best player of the season.
The 6th place is a fair achievement compared to the ability of Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem and his students, it is difficult to consider it a great success. However, Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem is still nominated for the best Coach of the month, not his colleague Popov.
"No problem. Individual awards are not as important as team achievements," coach Velizar Popov shared about missing the nomination for best coach of the season.
In the best player award, controversy once again revolved around the name Nguyen Van Quyet. In terms of achievements and personal performance, the Hanoi FC captain completely deserved to be on the nomination list.
Van Quyet scored 9 goals in V-League 2023, the only domestic player in the top 10 scorers of the tournament. Notably, the striker born in 1991 achieved this achievement despite being banned from playing up to 8 matches (including 7 matches in V-League). Perhaps this penalty is also the reason why Van Quyet was left out of the list of nominees for the best player of the season.
The titles of best coach, best player and other honors will be announced at the V-League Award ceremony taking place on August 31 in Hanoi.
