This afternoon, January 11, at VinUni University, there was a conversation with Professor J. Larry Jameson, Acting President of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). When asked about the opportunity to access high-quality university education for young people who do not have enough financial means, Professor Jameson said that for UPenn, the door is always open for talented students by supporting tuition fees for students from low-income families.

Professor J. Larry Jameson, Acting President of the University of Pennsylvania, spoke at VinUni University on the afternoon of January 11.

Professor Jameson said that 30 years ago, UPenn students knew about this prestigious and oldest university in the United States because their relatives had studied here. However, in this era, thanks to the internet, information can easily spread to every corner of the globe. Therefore, UPenn students today come not only from all over the United States but also from faraway countries like Vietnam, or underdeveloped countries like Uganda (a poor country in Africa - PV).

"We asked students how they heard about UPenn. The answer was through internet sources, through friends around the world," said Professor Jameson.

According to Professor Jameson, normally, to be able to study at UPenn or any other prestigious university, in addition to knowing about it, students will also have to overcome barriers in terms of cost and finance. However, 285 years ago, when founding UPenn, Dr. Benjamin Franklin always emphasized that the criteria for selecting students were based on their ability and potential, not financial ability.

"When evaluating candidates' profiles, we look at their abilities, potential, and aspirations, not just their financial capacity. To ensure financial resources for quality university education, we mobilize capital and call for sponsorship to open financial support programs and scholarships for students who do not have enough financial conditions to participate," Professor Jameson shared.

According to Professor Jameson, starting in the 2025-2026 school year, UPenn will guarantee a financial aid package that includes minimum tuition, grants, and work-study for students whose families have assets of about $200,000 or less. Previously, only students whose families had assets of $140,000 or less were eligible for this support.

Position Which is the best university?

During the conversation, Professor Jameson also advised students on how to practice so that they can contribute many positive values to society in the future. "The important thing is to find a mentor, a good example to follow. This sometimes takes time. But I believe that all lecturers are willing to support students, not only in studying but also in practicing skills and qualities to perfect themselves," said Professor Jameson.

Professor Jameson also shared his views on what makes an excellent university: "The core factor is the quality of the teaching staff. The top excellent universities always stand out because of their excellent teaching staff and professors, who are leading experts and talents from all over the world. For me personally, it is the excellent students who motivate me to become more excellent. The initial ideas from students are often the inspiration for the new research and inventions that we develop."

Professor J. Larry Jameson has been the acting chancellor of UPenn since December 2023. He is a world-leading endocrinologist and research scientist, and has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Van Meter Award from the American Thyroid Association, the Koch Award from the Endocrine Society, and the Sheen Award from the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.

Professor Jameson came to Vietnam this time as a member of the delegation from the University of Pennsylvania to VinUni University, the two sides have cooperated with each other for 7 years.

"We have had thorough discussions about the future roadmap. It is commendable that VinUni has clearly defined its growth rate and strategy, while maintaining its original founding values - that is, bringing good values to the community and society," commented Professor Jameson.
