Culture and education have always been typical highlights in the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and France. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 10 years of strategic partnership between Vietnam and France, let's review the typical milestones in the bilateral relationship that has lasted for centuries.

Culture - The first and continuous point of contact in the French - Vietnamese relationship

Going back to the 16th century, it can be seen that culture was the first and most consistent point of contact in the Franco-Vietnamese relationship. Alexandre de Rhodes (March 15, 1593 – November 5, 1660), a French missionary and linguist, lived in Vietnam for a long time. He made an important contribution to the formation of the Vietnamese national language by systematizing the way of recording Vietnamese sounds using the Latin alphabet and compiling the Vietnamese-Portuguese-Latin Dictionary (Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latium). The publication was published in Rome in 1651 and is considered the first Vietnamese dictionary. This event marked an important milestone in the deep relationship between the two countries.

Architecture – The intersection of two cultures with the timeless Indochinese style

On July 11, 1921, architect Ernest Hébrard signed a labor contract with the Governor General of Indochina to work in Hanoi for 6 months. But he did not expect the trip to last 10 years. These were also the 10 peak years of the French architect's career, making him remembered to this day.

He is the father of the Indochine style - a combination of the traditional beauty of Vietnam and the neoclassical style of France, expressing the quintessence, cultural identity and history. Each work in this style always brings a harmonious blend between the two cultures of Vietnam and France.

Ernest Hébrard's masterpieces include the main building of the Indochina University, now the Hanoi National University, and the Vietnam History Museum...

The Vietnam History Museum was established on September 3, 1958 on the basis of the Louis Finot Museum designed by architects C.Batteur and E.Hébrard in 1925 - a great representative of the Indochina architectural style, a style that combines the values of French architecture with indigenous architectural values.

According to experts, the core element that creates the timeless beauty and everlasting vitality of Indochine-style buildings is the intersection between large scale, grandeur, modern space according to French standards with the sophistication, gentleness and shy appearance of the typical Asian character of Vietnam.

Vietnamese Cultural Identity - Love in the heart of Former French President Jacque Chirac

The image of former French President Jacque Chirac is solemnly hung at Paris Business School (PSB) for his contributions to the common progress of the World and he is also known as "A Frenchman who loves Vietnam".

Jacques Chirac was born on November 29, 1932 in Paris to a father who was an administrative officer at an aircraft company and a mother who was a housewife. He was the one who brought the first Summit event to Vietnam. In 1997, the Francophonie Summit was held in Vietnam, also the first in Asia.

During his official visit to Vietnam from November 12-13, 1997, before the opening session of the Summit, President Jacques Chirac affirmed his desire to develop a "priority partnership" between the two countries.

Famous for being friendly and approachable, the President most loved by the French people, Jacques Chirac is also known for his passion for primitive cultures. He once said: "Culture and cultural character are the quintessence of a nation. A nation with 54 ethnic groups like Vietnam, having a Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, recording the culture of so many ethnic groups is a bright spot, a diamond preserving the culture of the Vietnamese people".

Emphasizing that culture is the foundation and character of each nation, Mr. Jacques Chirac affirmed that each country should retain that character.

When he arrived in Vietnam, he was very impressed by the lyrics: “If you do not remember your homeland, you will not grow up to be a man”. The lyrics made him think that each of us represents a history and a culture. Respecting and understanding one’s own culture is a fundamental factor in ensuring balance in each individual’s personality and in the development of the whole country.

Vietnam-France educational cooperation: 50 years of companionship for progress

If culture brings the French closer to Vietnam, educational cooperation is a solid foundation for progress and sustainable development.

Education and training cooperation between the two countries has been established and developed since the early 1980s. France has always considered education and training a priority in its cooperation activities in Vietnam, focusing mainly on teaching and developing French, training human resources at university and postgraduate levels in fields such as economic management, banking, finance, law, new technology, etc. The two sides have signed and cooperated to implement many key projects in the field of training.

President of the French Senate Gérard Larcher once said: “The past 50 years of France-Vietnam relations have been one of sharing and trust, respect for sovereignty and respect for differences. France is proud to have accompanied Vietnam for 50 years on the path to progress, of which educational cooperation is a successful example.”

With 50 years of establishment and development in France, 15 years of accompanying in training cooperation with leading universities in Vietnam, Paris Management University has been and will play an active role in improving the management experience of domestic administrators, affirming the capacity and position of the country in the international arena while always respecting, preserving and promoting the good values in the cooperative relationship between the two countries.
