Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh - one of Vietnam's math 'legends' - has just stopped being the head of the math group at the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University).

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Tran Nam Dung - Vice Principal of the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said: "Yesterday, February 7, the math team of the Gifted High School said goodbye to Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh. Actually, it was only the head of the math team, but Mr. Trinh is still the school's advisor on training gifted students and a geometry teacher who cannot be replaced."
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has been the head of the math group at the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University) since 1993, which is exactly 32 years.
According to Mr. Dung, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh was born on May 19, 1962, and according to regulations will retire in 2022, but the school continues to invite him to be the head of the math group. Recently, Mr. Trinh wished to retire from management work and also to "make room" for young people.
During these 32 years, the math team has contributed hundreds of national awards to the Gifted High School, including first prize in more than half of the years. In particular, the math team has contributed 20 international and regional medals, including 5 gold medals.
The past school year was also a successful year for the school's math team. In the recent national excellent student competition, the math team of the Gifted High School won 10/10 prizes, including 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes, 3 third prizes and 2 consolation prizes. 4 students were called to compete in the selection of the Vietnamese team to compete internationally in mid-March 2025.
"The above achievements all have great contributions from Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh. For many consecutive years, he has made great contributions in teaching students selected to compete in the International Math Olympiad.
In the eyes of many, Le Ba Khanh Trinh is a mathematical phenomenon in Vietnam. Students at the Gifted High School know Mr. Trinh as strict and enthusiastic in teaching. Colleagues say that Mr. Trinh - the group leader - is careful, serious, and gentle (never raising his voice in an argument).
Studying, living and working with him for 41 years, I still see a multi-talented and energetic Le Ba Khanh Trinh. He plays table tennis and soccer well. On the soccer field, he is both a goalkeeper and an excellent striker of the math-mechanics team of Moscow State University (MGU). He is the head of the art troupe of Vietnamese students of the math-mechanics department because of his beautiful dancing skills and ability to play the organ and modern guitar," Mr. Dung shared.

Le Ba Khanh Trinh was once the only Vietnamese student to win a special prize in an international math competition.
Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh was born in 1962 in Thua Thien Hue. In 1979, while a student in the specialized math class at Quoc Hoc Hue School, he was selected to participate in the International Math Olympiad in the UK with four other students.
He won first prize with a score of 40/40, and also won a special prize for a unique solution. To date, he is the only Vietnamese student to win a special prize in an international math competition.
After the above exam, he studied at the Mathematics Department of Moscow State University (Russia). He was guided by Professor, Academician Andrei Aleksandrovich Gonchar (Soviet Academy of Sciences) to write his graduation thesis and then his doctoral thesis.
After successfully defending his doctoral thesis, Le Ba Khanh Trinh returned to Vietnam to teach at the Mathematics Department of the University of Natural Sciences, High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University) until now.
