On the evening of February 7, Dr. Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of the High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City National University, shared information that the "golden boy" of Vietnamese mathematics, Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh, had just left his position as head of the math group at the High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City National University, after 32 years in this position.
Dr. Tran Nam Dung said that on February 7, the school's math group held a farewell ceremony for one of Vietnam's math "legends", Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh.
Mr. Dung also said that Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh was born in 1962 and is scheduled to retire in 2022, but the school continues to invite him to be the head of the math group. Recently, Dr. Trinh expressed his wish to retire from management work and also to "make room" for young people.
However, the Vice Principal of the Gifted High School affirmed: "Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has stopped holding the position of group leader but is still an advisor to the school on training gifted students and is an irreplaceable geometry teacher."
Mr. Dung added that Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has been the head of the math team at the Gifted High School since 1993, which is exactly 32 years. Under his leadership, the school's math team has won hundreds of national awards, of which more than half of the years have won first place. Notably, the math team has contributed 20 international and regional medals, including 5 gold medals.
Most recently, in the national excellent student exam for the 2024-2025 school year, 10/10 students of the math team of the Gifted High School won prizes. Four students were called to participate in the selection of the Vietnamese team to participate in the international math competition IMO in mid-March...
Not only is he known as a Vietnamese mathematical legend, but Mr. Trinh's colleagues also revealed: "Mr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh has many talents in culture and arts. He can dance tango, waltz... and is also a very good guitarist."
In 1979, Mr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh was one of five Vietnamese students selected to participate in the International Math Olympiad in London (UK), at that time he was a math student at Hue National School. He won first prize with a perfect score of 40/40, and also won a special prize for his unique solution in this exam.
After the above exam, he studied at the Faculty of Mathematics, Lomonosov Moscow State University in Moscow (Russia). After successfully defending his doctoral thesis, he returned to Vietnam and taught at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Natural Sciences, High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City National University) until now.
In more than 40 international math Olympiads, the special prize for the best answer has only been awarded once to Le Ba Khanh Trinh and no Vietnamese student has ever received a similar award.
Impromptu moments of Vietnam's "golden boy" of mathematics
Thanh Nien reported on November 17, 2019 that on personal pages, students and teachers expressed their excitement and shared a video clip of Dr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh standing on the podium, dancing to accompany students singing the song Bui Chal .
Accordingly, the clip is nearly one minute long, with images of students singing the song " Chalk Dust" in unison and excitedly, while on the podium, teacher Le Ba Khanh Trinh performs dance moves to accompany the students' performance.
Sharing about the above clip with Thanh Nien reporter at that time, teacher Le Ba Khanh Trinh said that those images were recorded in the class of grade 11 specialized in mathematics at Gifted High School - Ho Chi Minh City National University on the morning of November 15, 2019.
Teacher Trinh recounted: "When entering the classroom, students gave flowers and wished Vietnamese Teachers' Day. After that, I saw that they seemed to want to perform a performance, so I encouraged them to "let me keep the pace" and the whole class became excited. And both teachers and students had moments of improvisation and cooperation with each other. When the performance ended, some students and I realized that a classmate had recorded it. Today, I was surprised because many people were interested."
Besides, the "golden boy" of Vietnamese mathematics also said: "Sometimes, during my teaching hours, I also have spontaneous, happy moments with my students. Sometimes it's singing, sometimes it's playing the piano so they can show off their artistic talents. This is to create a fun, relaxing atmosphere to help them relieve stress after exercises and in-depth knowledge."
In particular, when viewing these images, many former students of Mr. Le Ba Khanh Trinh expressed their feelings: "My teacher is super cute" or "Almost everyone who studied with him knows and has seen some of his happy and humorous moments."
