On November 1, Foreign Trade University organized the 7th Internationalization Forum on Higher Education, aiming to create a forum for sharing knowledge and experience on innovative models in international cooperation in higher education.
Sharing at the forum, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Anh Tuan, Principal of Foreign Trade University, said that we are currently witnessing a period in which students are not only satisfied with studying domestically, but also crave access to world-class knowledge sources.
Mr. Tuan affirmed that international branch campuses (IBCs) play an important role as a bridge, helping students access high-quality international education without having to leave their home country.
However, the process of establishing and operating international branches is a challenging journey.

At the forum, Mr. Rob Stevens, General Manager of Global Partnerships at Massey University, shared about Massey's development journey from a small agricultural college, established in 1927, to a leading university with more than 27,000 students, including more than 5,000 international students from more than 100 countries.
According to Mr. Stevens, to be ranked in the top 3% of universities in the world, Massey University has successfully implemented transnational education programs, especially in Singapore, making the school a pioneer in the transnational education model in New Zealand.
Drawing on Massey University's experience, Mr Stevens introduced three possible models for expanding transnational education in Singapore, including expanding existing partnerships, creating joint ventures and establishing independent branch campuses.
Mr Stevens explained that Singapore's favourable legal environment, strong regulatory framework and proficiency in English make it an ideal market for transnational education initiatives.
“Massey’s transnational education model in Singapore is now the foundation for its expansion into Vietnam, where it hopes to offer programmes in computer science, business, agriculture, creative arts and social sciences,” said Mr Stevens.
Mr. Stevens emphasized the importance of selecting partners with similar cultures and maintaining a high level of trust. Successful partnerships require open communication, patience, and mutual understanding.
“Partnership is key,” Mr. Stevens asserted, stressing the need for unity of the organization’s values and goals to ensure effective international cooperation.
Pursuing international quality accreditation must be for "ensuring educational quality"
According to Associate Professor Dr. Pham Thu Huong, Vice Principal of Foreign Trade University, international cooperation is the way to help universities move faster and more effectively to achieve sustainable development goals.
Ms. Huong emphasized that in order to meet the requirements of international quality accreditation, the first thing universities must do is develop a clear roadmap to improve quality assurance conditions. The process of improving quality assurance conditions must be the top priority when pursuing the international quality accreditation program.
"This is a time when we can see international cooperation in education being strongly promoted, which is a driving force for universities in Vietnam to move towards international education standards.
International cooperation is a long-term process, creating trust with each other. When universities decide to cooperate internationally in the field of education, there must be a close, strong commitment, aiming for long-term development goals, and exploiting resources together. Only then will there be effectiveness in developing Vietnam's education," said Ms. Huong.
